The Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stated that the alleged missing ₦128 billion in public funds highlighted by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) occurred before his appointment. SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, had urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Attorney General and relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate claims that over ₦128 billion was missing or diverted from the Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET).
In response, Adelabu’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji, clarified that the audit report cited by SERAP pertains to the 2022 financial year, predating the current administration and the minister’s tenure, which began in August 2023. The ministry emphasized that while Adelabu has no objection to investigations, the issues in the report are unrelated to his administration’s operations or financial activities.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, stating it would cooperate with legitimate efforts to address legacy issues in the power sector while remaining focused on delivering stable and reliable electricity. The statement further highlighted that Adelabu is recognized for his adherence to due process, probity, and transparency in both public and private sector roles and remains determined to protect this reputation.
