COURT JUDGMENT ENFORCED AS ZUMA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PROPERTY RETURNS TO FOUNDING TRUSTEES

The long-standing legal dispute over the ownership and control of Zuma Memorial Hospital, Irrua, has reached a significant milestone following the successful execution of a court judgment in favour of the Incorporated Trustees of Zuma Memorial Hospital.

The judgment of the High Court sitting in Irrua, which was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal, was formally executed on Friday, June 19, 2026, bringing an end to years of legal uncertainty surrounding the property.

According to a statement issued by legal practitioner O.M. Eboigbe, Esq., all individuals, developers and parties asserting interests that are inconsistent with the court’s judgment have been advised to immediately desist from entering or carrying out any activities on the premises. The statement warned that any violation of the court’s orders could amount to contempt of court, an offence that may attract legal sanctions, including imprisonment.

The statement, however, clarified that legitimate businesses currently operating within the premises—including the hotel, farm and Airtel telecommunications mast—may engage the Incorporated Trustees of Zuma Memorial Hospital in discussions for lease agreements to facilitate the continued occupation and lawful use of the facilities.

The enforcement of the judgment is expected to pave the way for the restoration and revitalisation of Zuma Memorial Hospital in line with the vision of its founder, the late Dr. Christopher Okojie, whose desire was for the institution to remain a viable healthcare facility dedicated to serving humanity as a sustainable going concern.

The statement further expressed concern that despite the judgments of both the High Court and the Court of Appeal having been duly served on affected parties, some individuals allegedly proceeded to purchase portions of the disputed land and erect structures, apparently on the assumption that the court’s decisions would not be enforced.

Describing the development as regrettable, the statement noted that such actions represent a troubling disregard for the rule of law and the authority of Nigeria’s judicial system. It stressed that respect for valid court judgments remains fundamental to the preservation of justice, public order and confidence in democratic institutions.

Legal observers say the execution of the judgment underscores the importance of compliance with judicial pronouncements and serves as a reminder that court orders remain binding until set aside by a competent court.

With the enforcement now completed, attention is expected to shift towards the rehabilitation and future development of Zuma Memorial Hospital under the administration of its Incorporated Trustees, in keeping with the humanitarian vision of its founder.
