FG Reaffirms Commitment to Completing Otukpo Multipurpose Dam in Benue

Kingsley Ohens reporting

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the completion of the Otukpo Multipurpose Dam in Benue State, describing the project as critical to enhancing irrigation farming, improving water supply, and supporting hydropower generation for surrounding communities.

The assurance was given on Thursday by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE, during an assessment tour of the dam project site. The Minister was accompanied by top management officials of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Utsev emphasized that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains resolute in delivering strategic water infrastructure projects across the country, in line with its broader agenda of ensuring sustainable development, food security, and improved livelihoods.

According to him, the completion of the Otukpo Multipurpose Dam will significantly boost agricultural productivity through year-round irrigation, while also providing opportunities for renewable energy generation and improved access to clean and safe water for local populations.

“The Federal Government is fully committed to completing this project to serve its intended purpose of supporting irrigation farming, improving water availability, and contributing to economic growth in the region,” the Minister stated.

Prof. Utsev further reaffirmed that the Ministry is prioritizing projects that have direct socio-economic impacts on communities, particularly those that align with national goals on food security, climate resilience, and sustainable water resource management.

In addition to infrastructure development, the Minister used the occasion to encourage civic participation, urging residents of the area—especially those aged 18 years and above—to actively participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise. He stressed that civic engagement remains essential to strengthening democratic governance and national development.

The Otukpo Multipurpose Dam, once completed, is expected to play a vital role in transforming agricultural activities in Benue State, widely regarded as Nigeria’s food basket, while also contributing to improved water security and rural development.
