Eigbedion Urges Medical Community to Revisit Enabulele’s Call to Redefine Healthcare

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, Dr Andrew Oseghale Eigbedion, has called on members of the medical community, particularly the new generation of doctors and healthcare leaders, to revisit and reflect on the thought-provoking message delivered by former NMA President, former President of the Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA), and former President of the World Medical Association (WMA), Dr Osahon Enabulele, in his TEDx presentation, “Redefining Health by Standing Out.”

Eigbedion described the presentation as a compelling call for medical professionals to look beyond conventional approaches to healthcare and embrace their responsibility as agents of innovation, leadership and meaningful change.

In the presentation, Enabulele challenges healthcare professionals to rethink their roles within the health system, arguing that sustainable transformation requires individuals who are willing to question established practices, imagine better possibilities and translate those possibilities into tangible improvements in healthcare delivery.

The message, according to Eigbedion, goes beyond the traditional boundaries of medical practice. While doctors have an important responsibility to diagnose and treat diseases, they also have a broader role to play in shaping the policies, institutions, systems and environments that influence the health and wellbeing of populations.

Enabulele’s call for healthcare professionals to “stand out,” therefore, is not presented as a pursuit of personal recognition or individualism. Rather, it is a call to purposeful professional responsibility—having the courage to challenge practices that no longer serve patients effectively, the vision to develop better approaches and the commitment to contribute to positive change.

The Edo NMA Chairman further emphasised that Enabulele’s message provides an opportunity for the profession to reflect on the meaning of leadership in healthcare and the kind of medical environment the present generation of practitioners hopes to leave for those coming after them.

According to him, the presentation is particularly relevant to younger doctors who are entering a rapidly changing healthcare environment and will increasingly be called upon to combine clinical expertise with leadership, advocacy, innovation and a deeper understanding of the wider determinants of health.

Eigbedion therefore encouraged members of the medical community to watch and critically reflect on Enabulele’s TEDx presentation, describing it not merely as a speech but as an invitation to rethink professional purpose, leadership, innovation and the future direction of healthcare.
