Eseigbe Solidarity Movement Reporting-
The Eseigbe Solidarity Movement (ESM) has commended the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his fatherly disposition, calm yet firm leadership, and demonstrated commitment to justice and dialogue following the recent unrest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Movement described Governor Okpebholo as a listening and people-oriented leader whose prompt engagement with relevant stakeholders helped to clarify the true nature of the incident and prevent the unjust stigmatisation of students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.
ESM noted that the Governor’s meeting with the President of the Ambrose Alli University Students’ Union Government (SUG) was a clear indication of responsible governance anchored on facts, credible intelligence, and inclusive consultation. According to the Movement, the Governor’s unequivocal position that the disturbance was not a students’ protest but a criminal act perpetrated by non-students loitering around the university environment reflects courage, sincerity, and a strong resolve to protect innocent citizens.
The Movement further applauded Governor Okpebholo for his assurance that any genuine students who may have been arrested during efforts to restore order would be promptly identified and released, describing the directive as a reassurance of the administration’s respect for students’ rights and due process.
ESM also aligned with the Governor’s dismissal of alleged kidnapping claims linked to the unrest, noting that his revelation of staged activities aimed at misleading the public and fomenting tension underscores the need for vigilance and responsible information sharing. The Movement described the burning of markets and destruction of property in Ekpoma as condemnable acts of criminality that must not be allowed to thrive under any guise.
According to ESM, Governor Okpebholo’s strong warning that anyone, regardless of political status or affiliation, found sponsoring or deploying hoodlums to destabilise Edo communities would be brought to justice sends a powerful signal that lawlessness will not be tolerated in the state.
The Movement also acknowledged the confirmation by the SUG President, Comrade Osadebamen Ehizogie Michael, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Ambrose Alli University, Prof. Andrew Eromonsele, that students neither organised the unrest nor were arrests made within the university campus, further validating the Governor’s position.
Eseigbe Solidarity Movement reaffirmed that the Edo State Government’s stance demonstrates a genuine commitment to protecting students, restoring peace in Ekpoma, and sanitising the university environment from criminal elements exploiting it for unlawful activities.
The Movement concluded by expressing its unwavering support for Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration and called on students, residents, and stakeholders to cooperate with government efforts aimed at sustaining peace, security, and socio-economic stability across Edo State, noting that the Governor’s leadership has once again proven that governance thrives on listening, justice, and decisive action in the interest of the people.
