The Esan Central Local Government Council has intensified its environmental sanitation campaign with a renewed warning against indiscriminate waste disposal at the Eguare Market in Irrua, reaffirming its commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for residents.
Leading a large-scale refuse evacuation exercise at the market on Monday, August 3, 2026, the Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Kelvin Ainiyalenhimi Iyere, said the council would no longer tolerate the use of public spaces as illegal dumping sites.
Speaking after inspecting the sanitation operation, the council chairman described the persistent accumulation of refuse at the market as a serious environmental concern capable of undermining public health and the overall appearance of the community. He emphasized that safeguarding the environment remains a central focus of his administration and assured residents that stronger monitoring and enforcement mechanisms would be deployed to discourage indiscriminate waste disposal.
Rt. Hon. Iyere noted that while the council will continue to carry out regular waste evacuation and environmental sanitation exercises, lasting success depends on the active cooperation of residents, traders, and business owners. He urged members of the public to adopt responsible waste management practices by disposing of refuse only at designated locations.
The chairman also acknowledged the support of Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whose provision of earth-moving equipment to local government councils has significantly improved waste evacuation operations. According to him, the intervention has enhanced the council’s operational capacity while reducing the financial burden previously associated with large-scale sanitation exercises.
Also speaking, the Head of the Environmental and Health Department of Esan Central Local Government, Sanitarian Christiana Akhere Egbele, explained that the evacuation exercise formed part of the council’s routine environmental sanitation programme. She disclosed that the operation was postponed during the previous sanitation exercise due to persistent heavy rainfall, noting that deploying heavy machinery under such conditions could have exposed the equipment to avoidable damage.
Egbele appealed to residents and the business community around Eguare Market to support the council’s sanitation efforts by maintaining proper hygiene standards and refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, stressing that environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility.
Among officials who participated in the exercise were Sanitarian Gloria Eraga, Sanitarian Osagie Efomon, Sanitarian Sani Eboi Grace, Assistant Sanitarian Joel Ijie, Assistant Sanitarian Matthew Okodute, and Assistant Sanitarian Oyabure Kingsley Confidence.
The sanitation exercise underscores the Esan Central Local Government’s determination to sustain a cleaner environment through regular waste management initiatives, improved public health standards, and the preservation of markets and other public spaces as safe, orderly, and conducive centres for commercial and social activities.
