A group of concerned Inspectors in the Nigeria Police Force who possess Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualifications has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police to extend to them the same level of recognition recently accorded to Police Medical Officers.
In a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, the officers first commended the IGP for his leadership and commitment to professionalism, merit, and institutional reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
They specifically praised the recent recommendation for the conversion and promotion of Police Medical Officers, including the elevation of SP (Dr.) Opeyemi Ojo from the Inspectorate Cadre to the rank of Superintendent of Police, describing the decision as “a commendable demonstration of your resolve to recognize specialized knowledge, professional competence, and outstanding service.”
According to the letter, the decision has inspired confidence among personnel and reinforced the belief that academic and professional excellence are valued under the current police leadership.
While applauding the initiative, the concerned Inspectors urged the Inspector-General to extend similar consideration to serving police officers who have obtained Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees while in service.
The letter emphasized that earning a PhD represents the highest level of academic achievement and reflects years of rigorous research, intellectual discipline, and commitment to knowledge creation.
The officers noted that many Inspectors with doctoral qualifications possess expertise in criminology, forensic science, law, psychology, guidance and counselling, public administration, cybersecurity, sociology, information technology, intelligence, strategic studies, and other disciplines directly relevant to modern policing.
They argued that such expertise could significantly strengthen policy formulation, intelligence gathering, crime prevention, training, research, and organizational development within the Nigeria Police Force.
The group further stated that recognizing and appropriately rewarding officers with doctoral qualifications through promotion or career advancement would encourage educational development among personnel while enhancing the Force’s capacity to address emerging security challenges.
According to the letter, such recognition would also align the Nigeria Police Force with international best practices, where advanced academic qualifications are regarded as valuable assets for institutional leadership and operational effectiveness.
The concerned Inspectors further observed that the current police leadership has consistently demonstrated that merit, competence, and dedication should be rewarded irrespective of cadre or background.
They expressed confidence that extending similar recognition to Inspectors with PhD qualifications would further consolidate the Inspector-General’s legacy of fairness and inspire more officers to pursue higher education in the interest of national security and professional excellence.
The officers also appealed for the establishment of a policy framework that would provide deserving Inspectors with doctoral qualifications an avenue for appropriate career progression, subject to the operational needs and regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
They concluded by expressing confidence that under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force would continue to set new standards of professionalism, fairness, and excellence.
