The Edo State Government’s sustained commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery has received fresh commendation as the Edo Specialist Hospital (ESH), Benin City, applauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for providing state-of-the-art In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) equipment while announcing the hospital’s successful attainment of full residency accreditation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The commendation came during a press conference and media tour held to commemorate the hospital’s seventh anniversary, where the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Anthonia Inibokun Njoku, highlighted a series of landmark achievements that have positioned the institution among Nigeria’s leading specialist healthcare facilities.
Dr. Njoku described Governor Okpebholo’s investment in reproductive healthcare as a significant milestone that will broaden access to fertility treatment and offer renewed hope to couples experiencing infertility challenges.
She explained that the newly acquired IVF equipment would enable the hospital to provide advanced assisted reproductive services, reducing the need for patients to seek such specialised care outside Edo State.
The CMD also announced that the hospital’s Residency Training Programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology has secured full accreditation from both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, a development she said reinforces the institution’s growing reputation as a centre for postgraduate medical education and specialist training.
According to her, the hospital recently completed accreditation for its Family Medicine and Dentistry departments, further expanding its capacity to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Dr. Njoku attributed the hospital’s remarkable progress to the unwavering support of the Edo State Government, noting that Governor Okpebholo approved the absorption of 126 contract staff into the state workforce and authorised the recruitment of additional medical personnel, resulting in more than 290 direct employment opportunities.
She further disclosed that the Edo Specialist Hospital has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mudiame University, Irrua, to serve as a teaching hospital for the institution’s medical students, a partnership expected to strengthen medical education, clinical research and professional training.
The hospital has also expanded its range of specialist services with the introduction of Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC), aimed at improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes across Edo State.
In addition, Dr. Njoku revealed that the hospital is fully integrated into both the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EDOHIS) and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), enabling beneficiaries of the state and federal health insurance programmes to access quality and affordable healthcare services.
The anniversary activities concluded with a guided tour of the hospital’s facilities led by senior medical personnel, including Dr. Suleman Ozemoka, providing journalists with firsthand access to the institution’s modern medical equipment and specialised healthcare infrastructure.
