Six Months of Impact: How Enabulele Repositioned Edo Sports for Greater Success

By Edoko Wilson Edoko

The first six months of 2026 have been transformative for sports in Edo State. Under the leadership of the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, the state has witnessed remarkable progress across athlete development, grassroots sports, elite competitions, institutional reforms and sports administration.

Guided by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda, Enabulele has pursued an ambitious vision of making Edo the benchmark for sports excellence in Nigeria while creating opportunities for young talents to thrive.

One of the administration’s biggest achievements came at the 2nd Niger Delta Sports Festival (Edo 2026), where Team Edo emerged overall champions after an outstanding performance that yielded 111 medals—52 gold, 34 silver and 25 bronze. The victory ended a 24-year wait for a major regional multi-sport title and reflected months of meticulous planning, effective athlete preparation, technical discipline and strategic leadership.

The successful hosting of the Niger Delta Sports Festival equally reinforced Edo’s status as Nigeria’s sports hub. Widely commended for its organisation, facilities and hospitality, the Games showcased the state’s capacity to host major national and regional sporting events.

Grassroots sports development also received renewed attention during the period. Through local government trials, talent identification programmes and structured camping, the Commission expanded opportunities for young athletes across the state. These initiatives complemented Governor Okpebholo’s “Catch Them Young” policy by building a steady pipeline of future champions.

Athlete welfare remained another major priority. Outstanding performers continued to receive recognition and encouragement, while Edo athletes competing at national and international competitions enjoyed institutional support. Edo cyclists who excelled at the 2026 African Track Cycling Championships were celebrated by the Commission, reflecting its commitment to rewarding excellence.

Within the Commission, Enabulele strengthened institutional efficiency by promoting professionalism and staff motivation. The monthly Best Staff Award initiative continued to inspire healthy competition, dedication and improved productivity among employees, contributing to a more efficient sports administration.

April 2026 marked another significant milestone for the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, as he was honoured with the prestigious Sportsville Special Recognition Award in the Visionary Leadership category in recognition of his outstanding contributions to sports development and administration.

Football, the state’s flagship sport, equally recorded significant milestones during the period.

The crowning achievement came in June when Edo Queens Football Club emerged champions of the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League Premiership Super Six, reclaiming the league title after an impressive campaign in Port Harcourt.

After recovering from an opening defeat to Nasarawa Amazons, the Benin City-based side recorded emphatic victories over FC Robo Queens and Abia Angels before holding defending champions Bayelsa Queens to a decisive goalless draw to finish top of the standings with 10 points.

The triumph secured Edo Queens’ qualification to represent Nigeria at the WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifiers, further cementing Edo State’s growing reputation in women’s football.

In celebrating the achievement, Enabulele dedicated the title to Governor Monday Okpebholo, acknowledging the Governor’s unwavering commitment to sports development and consistent support for athletes and sports institutions across the state.

He praised the resilience of the players, the tactical discipline of the technical crew led by Coach Moses Aduku, and the collective effort that produced another historic success for Edo football.

The Commission also sustained support for Bendel Insurance Football Club while strengthening collaborations with sports associations and stakeholders to ensure sustained growth across different sporting disciplines.

Inclusive sports development equally remained a focal point. Edo’s para-athletes continued to receive institutional support, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that athletes with disabilities enjoy equal opportunities to compete and excel.

Beyond competitions, Enabulele’s open-door leadership style strengthened relationships with coaches, sports administrators, media practitioners and other stakeholders, fostering collaboration and confidence in the Commission’s vision for sports development.

The achievements recorded between January and June 2026 represent more than medals, trophies and championships. They reflect a deliberate strategy focused on sustainable development through grassroots talent discovery, athlete welfare, institutional reforms, stakeholder engagement and competitive excellence.

As Edo State enters the second half of the year, the foundation laid during these six months provides strong momentum for even greater accomplishments.

Looking ahead, the Edo State Sports Commission is focused on sustaining the momentum. With preparations already in top gear, Team Edo is targeting outstanding performances at the forthcoming National Intermediate Games in Lagos and the National Sports Festival in Enugu. Backed by strategic planning, intensive athlete preparation and continued government support, the state is optimistic of achieving another successful outing and further consolidating its position as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting powerhouses.

Under Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele’s leadership, the Edo State Sports Commission continues to redefine sports administration by building champions, empowering young people and positioning Edo as one of Africa’s foremost centres of sporting excellence.
