Governor Okpebholo Charges 497 Forest Guards to Secure Edo Forests, Strengthen State Security

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state by charging 497 newly trained Forest Guards to protect forest communities, reclaim ungoverned spaces from criminal elements, and support law enforcement efforts in safeguarding lives and property.

The Governor gave the charge during the passing-out parade and induction ceremony for the recruits at the Police Training School, Ogida Barracks, Benin City, where he emphasized that the Forest Guard initiative remains a critical component of his administration’s broader strategy to enhance security and restore public confidence across Edo State.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Musa Yakubu, Governor Okpebholo congratulated the newly inducted personnel on the successful completion of their intensive training, urging them to discharge their responsibilities with discipline, professionalism, courage, and unwavering integrity.

According to the Governor, the training marks only the beginning of a greater responsibility entrusted to them by the people of Edo State.

“As you step into active service, remember that you are ambassadors of Edo State. The people expect courage, discipline and dedication from you. Your duty is to protect our forests, support law enforcement agencies, and contribute meaningfully to the peace and security of our dear state,” he stated.

Governor Okpebholo noted that his administration remains resolute in its determination to ensure every part of the state is secure, stressing that the deployment of the Forest Guards will significantly strengthen the state’s security architecture while helping to curb criminal activities in previously ungoverned forest areas.

He further assured the recruits that commitment, professionalism, and exceptional service would be recognized and rewarded, encouraging them to remain focused on their mission of protecting communities and preserving peace.

Also speaking at the ceremony, the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Commissioner of Police Aniefiok Akpan, congratulated the graduates and disclosed that the newly trained Forest Guards would be deployed immediately across the 18 local government areas of Edo State, with special attention to vulnerable and ungoverned forest locations to reinforce ongoing security operations.

The Forest Guard programme forms part of the Edo State Government’s sustained efforts to improve internal security through collaboration with federal security agencies and community-based initiatives aimed at denying criminal elements safe havens within the state’s forests.
