Kingsley Ohens reporting

Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has reaffirmed his commitment to building a sustainable framework for sports development in Nigeria with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Institute for Sports and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja.

The agreement marks a significant step toward fostering institutional collaboration aimed at strengthening capacity development, promoting knowledge exchange, and advancing the growth of Nigeria’s sports sector through strategic partnerships.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Shaibu emphasized that the future of sports development in Nigeria cannot rely solely on government funding. He noted that sustainable progress requires innovative partnerships capable of mobilizing expertise, resources, and long-term investments to enhance the nation’s competitiveness on regional and global sporting platforms.

Drawing from his experience as Deputy Governor of Edo State, the NIS Director-General stressed that collaboration between public institutions remains a critical driver of meaningful reforms capable of transforming the sports industry.

He described the partnership with the National Judicial Institute as a reflection of a shared vision to promote institutional excellence, strengthen human capacity, and contribute to national development through sports.

Shaibu also expressed appreciation to the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Hon. Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi Adejumo, for his support and confidence in the reform agenda being implemented at the National Institute for Sports.

According to him, the MoU represents more than a formal agreement, serving instead as the foundation for a productive relationship that will create new opportunities for innovation, professional development, and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.

The NIS Director-General further disclosed that the Institute is pursuing additional strategic collaborations as part of its broader vision to reposition the institution as a centre of excellence, expand alternative funding opportunities, and establish a resilient framework for sports development across the country.

The partnership underscores the National Institute for Sports’ commitment to leveraging inter-agency cooperation in driving reforms that will strengthen sports administration, improve institutional capacity, and support Nigeria’s aspirations for greater success in international sporting competitions.
