As Nigerians dey celebrate Democracy Day, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo don yarn say make everybody shine eye like person wey dey guard pot of soup for village meeting, because democracy no be something wey person go build finish come sleep.
For message wey Governor Okpebholo release on Friday, im talk say June 12 no be only day to remember our democracy heroes dem; na day wey everybody suppose ask himself wetin e dey do to protect the democracy wey plenty people suffer and sweat build.
The Governor remember the famous June 12, 1993 election and the struggle wey Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other democracy warriors fight. According to am, the lesson from that time still dey important today as Nigeria dey battle insecurity, hard economy and other wahala.
“June 12 dey remind us say democracy no be akara wey you buy for morning finish chop. Na journey wey everybody must continue. Our heroes fight give us right to choose leaders, but na our work to protect the system,” Okpebholo talk.
The Governor come point finger at insecurity, saying kidnappers, cult boys, armed robbers and other bad belle people dey try scatter the progress of the country.
According to am, democracy no fit sweet for person wey dey sleep with one eye open because fear full everywhere.
“Wetin democracy go mean for family wey no fit sleep because kidnappers dey patrol like night bus? Security na the foundation of every better society. If security no dey, development go pack load disappear,” he talk.
Governor Okpebholo say im government no dey fold hand like spectator for football match. According to am, Edo State don strengthen work with security agencies, improve intelligence gathering and continue serious fight against kidnapping and cultism.
The Governor also boast small about achievements under im SHINE Agenda, including better healthcare through EdoHIS, road and infrastructure repairs, investment for education, youth empowerment programmes and economic projects wey dey touch people’s lives.
On the matter of Nigeria’s future, Okpebholo say Nigerians no suppose lose hope because this country don survive plenty gbege before.
“Nigeria don waka pass many rough roads before and we go still cross this one. With good leadership, strong institutions and citizens wey get sense and love for country, better days still dey front,” he say.
The Governor also beg politicians and public office holders make dem play politics with sense, avoid lies, propaganda and bitterness wey fit damage democratic institutions.
As future elections dey come, he advise politicians make dem campaign on issues wey concern the people instead of turning politics to wrestling competition.
“Democracy dey survive when people participate well, leaders dey accountable and institutions dey respected. Make we continue to build Nigeria where justice go reign, opportunities go plenty and everybody go fit enjoy peace and better life,” the Governor conclude.
