FALSE KIDNAPPING ALARM: EDO POLICE ARREST SOCIAL MEDIA USER OVER ALLEGED MISINFORMATION

Kingsley Ohens reporting

BENIN CITY, EDO STATE – The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media user, Uzebor Emmanuel, popularly known online as “Aza Woman,” over allegations of disseminating false information relating to kidnapping activities in parts of Benin City.

According to the Command, the suspect allegedly circulated viral reports on social media claiming that students and residents were being abducted through the use of mini buses in the Aduwawa and Ikpoba Hill areas of the state capital. The posts further alleged that several victims had been kidnapped, with some reportedly escaping captivity while others were forced to pay ransom to secure their freedom.

The Police disclosed that preliminary investigations conducted into the claims found no evidence to substantiate the allegations. Authorities maintained that the reports were false and misleading, resulting in widespread fear, anxiety, and public concern among residents.

Security experts have consistently warned that the unchecked spread of unverified information, particularly on security-related matters, can have far-reaching consequences. Beyond causing panic, such misinformation can undermine public confidence in security institutions, create unnecessary tension within communities, and divert critical law enforcement resources away from genuine emergencies and criminal investigations.

The Edo State Police Command emphasized that the deliberate dissemination of false security alerts constitutes a serious offence under the law and can threaten public order and safety. The Command further stated that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, residents were urged to exercise caution when consuming and sharing information on social media platforms. The spokesperson advised members of the public to verify security-related reports through credible and official channels before forwarding them to others.

The development serves as a reminder of the growing challenge posed by misinformation in the digital age, where unverified claims can spread rapidly and trigger unnecessary public alarm. Security agencies continue to encourage responsible use of social media and greater public vigilance in distinguishing between verified information and unfounded speculation.

As authorities intensify efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety, citizens are urged to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities through appropriate channels and refraining from sharing information whose authenticity has not been confirmed.
