Okpebholo Clears Medical Bills of Fire Victim, Other Patients at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital

Governor Monday Okpebholo has settled the medical expenses of a pregnant woman, her husband who sustained severe fire burns, and several other patients receiving treatment at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital.

The intervention followed the governor’s visit to the hospital, where he assessed the condition of patients admitted in various wards and directed that their outstanding medical bills be paid by the Edo State Government.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the visit, Governor Okpebholo explained that the pregnant woman had initially approached him to seek financial assistance for her husband, who had suffered serious burns in a fire incident and was undergoing treatment.

According to the governor, the situation became more urgent after members of his medical team discovered that the woman was already due for delivery. She was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors carried out an emergency cesarean section that resulted in the safe delivery of a baby.

“The woman came to seek help for her husband because they were looking for funds to settle his medical bills. When my doctors noticed she was due for delivery, they promptly moved her to the hospital where she eventually delivered through a cesarean operation,” the governor stated.

Governor Okpebholo further disclosed that his administration had reached an agreement with the hospital management to fully cover the medical expenses of the couple as well as other patients encountered during the visit.

He expressed optimism about the recovery of the fire victim and other critically ill patients currently receiving care at the facility, particularly those admitted in the intensive care unit.

“We have taken responsibility for the medical bills of the patients we met during the visit so that their treatment can continue without interruption. By the grace of God, we believe the man and other patients in the ICU will recover speedily,” he added.

The governor noted that the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to supporting residents of Edo State, particularly those facing medical emergencies and financial hardship.

Patients and their relatives who benefited from the intervention expressed gratitude to the governor, describing the support as a timely relief from the burden of escalating hospital bills.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, who reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to improving access to healthcare and providing assistance to vulnerable citizens.
