Benin City, the capital of Edo State, has earned global recognition after emerging as one of the winners of the prestigious Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge, securing a $1 million innovation prize in a highly competitive global contest that celebrates bold solutions to pressing urban challenges.
The competition, organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies, attracted participation from more than 600 cities across the world, with only 25 cities from 20 countries making the final list of award recipients. Significantly, Benin City was among just four cities from Africa that achieved the remarkable milestone, further projecting the city on the global stage as a hub for innovation and progressive urban governance.
The award recognizes the city’s forward-looking initiative aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery systems, demonstrating how local solutions can address complex public health challenges while improving the quality of life for citizens.
Governor Monday Okpebholo described the global recognition as a clear affirmation of Edo State’s commitment to innovation-driven governance and strategic reforms in the health sector.
According to the governor, the achievement underscores the capacity of Benin City to produce transformative ideas capable of competing successfully on the international stage.
“This recognition reflects innovation, resilience, and the unwavering dedication of our team to transforming healthcare delivery across Edo State. It demonstrates that bold and practical ideas emerging from Benin City can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world,” the governor said.
He further commended the Edo State Ministry of Health and the team of professionals who worked tirelessly to develop and present the initiative, noting that the award reinforces Edo State’s growing reputation for implementing impactful public sector reforms.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the people of Edo State for their continued support and confidence in the administration’s policies and programmes aimed at improving the welfare and wellbeing of citizens.
Observers note that the recognition places Benin City firmly within the circle of globally acknowledged innovative cities, capable of driving meaningful change through technology, policy innovation, and strategic governance.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, who disclosed the development in an official statement on Sunday, emphasized that the recognition not only celebrates the ingenuity of the Edo team but also opens the door for further collaboration and technical support to scale up the initiative.
The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge remains one of the world’s most competitive platforms for cities seeking to develop creative solutions to complex urban issues. Winning cities receive funding, expert support, and global visibility to implement transformative projects that can be replicated in other parts of the world.
For Edo State, the latest global recognition represents more than an award—it signals a growing international confidence in the state’s governance approach and its commitment to building resilient institutions capable of delivering sustainable development for its people.
