Ambrose Oyakhilomen Resumes as Edo SUBEB Chairman, Pledges Renewed Focus on Basic Education

Hon. Ayewoh Ambrose Oyakhilomen has officially assumed duty as the new Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), signalling a new phase in the state’s efforts to strengthen the delivery of quality and inclusive basic education.

Oyakhilomen resumed office on Monday, August 24, 2026, following his clearance and confirmation by the Edo State House of Assembly. His assumption of office was marked by a warm reception from the management and staff of Edo SUBEB, who welcomed him to the Board and expressed optimism about the direction of his leadership.

The new Executive Chairman takes charge of an institution with a critical mandate covering early childhood care and development, primary education and junior secondary education across Edo State. The Board is responsible for improving learning outcomes, supporting teacher professional development, providing essential learning materials and infrastructure, and strengthening quality assurance across the basic education system.

His resumption comes at a time when the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is placing renewed emphasis on human capital development and the transformation of the education sector as a key component of its development agenda.

Oyakhilomen is expected to work with the management, teachers, education stakeholders and relevant government institutions to consolidate ongoing reforms while introducing initiatives capable of improving teaching and learning outcomes across the state.

Speaking on his assumption of office, the new SUBEB Chairman expressed commitment to providing purposeful leadership and contributing meaningfully to the advancement of basic education in Edo State.

His emergence also follows his confirmation by the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, August 24, where the Assembly approved his appointment as part of its proceedings.

With 18 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) operating across the state, Edo SUBEB provides an important institutional framework for translating government education policies into practical outcomes at the grassroots.

The new leadership is therefore expected to focus on strengthening accountability, improving school infrastructure and learning environments, enhancing teacher effectiveness, promoting inclusive education and ensuring that Edo children receive the quality foundational education required to compete in an increasingly knowledge-driven world.
