Former Member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Patrick Ikhariale, PhD, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions, describing the decision as a bold and strategic intervention that will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and enhance the nation’s capacity to confront emerging security threats.
Ikhariale, who represented Esan Central, Esan West and Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said the establishment of a new Army Division in Benin City to serve Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives, protecting critical national assets and restoring public confidence in the country’s security institutions.
According to him, the creation of additional Army divisions, alongside the approval for the recruitment of 28,000 new military personnel, reflects President Tinubu’s determination to build a stronger, more responsive and professionally equipped Armed Forces capable of effectively tackling insecurity across the country.
He noted that the South-South region has continued to face complex security challenges ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related violence to attacks on critical infrastructure, stressing that the new Benin Division will significantly improve military presence, operational coordination, intelligence gathering and rapid response across Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States.
“The expansion of the Nigerian Army is a timely and commendable decision. It represents a major investment in national security and sends a clear message that the Federal Government remains committed to protecting the lives and property of Nigerians. The establishment of the Benin Division will undoubtedly strengthen security operations within the South-South and contribute meaningfully to peace, stability and economic development,” he said.
Ikhariale further applauded Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for what he described as the governor’s unwavering commitment to combating insecurity since assuming office.
He said Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated remarkable leadership through the implementation of practical security initiatives, increased collaboration with security agencies and sustained support for efforts aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating across the state.
According to the former federal lawmaker, the governor’s proactive approach has continued to inspire confidence among residents and investors while creating a safer environment for businesses and socio-economic activities to thrive.
He noted that the synergy between the Federal Government and the Edo State Government in addressing security challenges would produce lasting results, adding that sustainable peace can only be achieved through strong institutions, adequate funding, modern security infrastructure and effective collaboration among all levels of government.
Ikhariale urged residents of Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States to support the security agencies by providing timely and credible information capable of assisting intelligence gathering and crime prevention, emphasizing that security remains a collective responsibility.
He expressed confidence that the establishment of the new Army Division, combined with the ongoing security initiatives of the Edo State Government, would further strengthen the fight against criminality, boost public safety and accelerate economic growth across the South-South region.
The former lawmaker reaffirmed his support for every genuine initiative aimed at promoting national unity, peace and security, stating that a secure Nigeria remains the foundation for sustainable development and shared prosperity.
