Kingsley Ohens reporting.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work on the ongoing reconstruction of the Benin-Sapele Road, stating that the concrete pavement being laid is designed to serve the people of Edo State for at least 80 years before requiring any major maintenance.
The Governor made the remarks on Thursday during an inspection of the strategic road project in Benin City, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering durable infrastructure capable of supporting economic growth and improving the quality of life of residents.
Governor Okpebholo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the necessary funding for the reconstruction, noting that the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure across the country.
Describing the project as a worthwhile investment in the future of Edo State, the Governor said the standard of construction demonstrates a clear focus on quality, durability and long-term value.
“It is a quality job they are doing here. Everything is going on well. I have nothing else to say but to thank President Bola Tinubu for providing the funds. What you are seeing today is the result of somebody who has worked hard to make these resources available. That is why you are seeing this level of development in Edo today,” he said.
He further noted that the use of concrete pavement throughout the Benin-Sapele Road underscores the seriousness of the project, stressing that it represents a lasting solution to one of the state’s major transport corridors.
“Throughout this Sapele Road, you can see concrete pavement all the way. These are not empty promises; this is serious and expensive work. It is a quality job that will last for at least 80 years before we even need to think about major maintenance,” the Governor added.
Residents who spoke during the inspection commended the administration for the transformation taking place on the highway, describing the reconstruction as a significant relief for motorists and commuters.
A pensioner, Mrs. Pat Ogie, recalled that the road had previously been synonymous with prolonged traffic congestion but said the ongoing reconstruction had greatly improved the movement of vehicles.
“Before the coming of Governor Okpebholo, we used to experience heavy traffic on this road, but that has become a thing of the past. God will continue to bless our governor,” she said.
Similarly, trader Mrs. Justina Osaghae praised the quality of the ongoing work, describing it as a major infrastructure upgrade that would enhance transportation and economic activities within the state.
The inspection further underscored the Edo State Government’s resolve to deliver sustainable infrastructure projects that meet international standards while supporting the broader development objectives of the administration.
The details of the Governor’s inspection were made available in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Edo State, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele.
