Okpebholo’s Anti-Crime Drive Gains Momentum as Edo Approves Special Court for Kidnapping, Cultism Cases

The Edo State Government has recorded another major breakthrough in its campaign against kidnapping and cultism following the approval of a Special Criminal Court by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa. The development is expected to strengthen the state’s criminal justice system by ensuring the speedy prosecution of suspects charged with the two offences.

The establishment of the court followed a formal request by the Edo State Government to the Chief Judge on June 19, 2026. The request, signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, sought the creation of a dedicated court to expedite the trial of kidnapping and cultism cases as part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity across the state.

According to the approval, the new court, to be known as Special Criminal Court 1, will commence operations on July 1, 2026. The court will sit in Benin City, the Edo State capital, and is expected to accelerate the adjudication of criminal cases that have contributed to growing security concerns in the state.

The approval marks another milestone in Governor Okpebholo’s security agenda, which has focused on strengthening law enforcement institutions, enhancing collaboration with security agencies, and introducing legal reforms aimed at deterring violent crimes. The administration has consistently maintained that the protection of lives and property remains the foundation for sustainable economic growth and development.

Governor Okpebholo had earlier vowed to confront kidnappers and cultists with the full weight of the law, declaring that his administration would not tolerate criminal activities in any part of the state. He also stated that he would sign the death warrant for the execution by hanging of persons convicted and sentenced to death for kidnapping and cult-related offences, where such punishment is prescribed by law.

The governor has argued that the establishment of a special court would eliminate unnecessary delays in criminal proceedings, ensure swift justice for victims, and send a strong signal to criminal elements that Edo State is no longer a safe haven for their activities. He expressed confidence that the initiative would further strengthen public confidence in the justice system.

Security observers believe the Special Criminal Court will complement other measures introduced by the Okpebholo administration, including the re-enactment of anti-crime laws, the establishment of the Edo Security Corps, and increased investment in security infrastructure and operational logistics to combat violent crime across the state.

With Special Criminal Court 1 set to begin sitting on July 1, 2026, the Edo State Government says it remains resolute in its commitment to restoring peace and security. The latest initiative underscores Governor Monday Okpebholo’s determination to set the pace in the fight against kidnapping and cultism while creating a safer environment for residents, businesses, and investors throughout Edo State.
