Edo Government Orders Temporary Closure of Three Schools in Akoko Edo Over Security Concerns

The Edo State Government has announced the immediate closure of three public secondary schools in Akoko Edo Local Government Area as part of proactive measures to safeguard students, teachers, and school personnel amid prevailing security concerns in the area.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke.

The decision, approved by Governor Monday Okpebholo, takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the temporary closure underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, particularly within the education sector.

Dr. Ebojele stated that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended pending further directives from the government, while assuring residents that comprehensive efforts are underway to address the security situation and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.

He, however, clarified that students currently participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be granted access to their examination centres under enhanced security arrangements coordinated by school authorities, security agencies, and community leaders.

To ensure an orderly implementation of the directive, principals of the affected schools have been instructed to facilitate the safe release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities and assets throughout the closure period, and maintain regular communication with relevant government authorities and security agencies.

The government also directed school administrators to comply strictly with any additional directives that may be issued as developments unfold.

Dr. Ebojele appealed to parents, guardians, and residents of the affected communities to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security personnel, stressing that public safety remains a top priority of the Governor Okpebholo administration.

He reiterated the government’s assurance that all necessary measures are being taken to stabilize the situation and ensure the safe resumption of academic activities once conditions are deemed conducive.

The temporary closure reflects the Edo State Government’s determination to place the welfare and security of students and educators above all other considerations while working closely with relevant stakeholders to maintain peace and public safety across the state.
