In the game of governance, few scorecards read as decisively as the distinguished Governor Monday Okpebholo is posting in Edo’s health sector. If development were a football match, the Governor has not just found the back of the net, he is redefining the playbook, one life-saving policy at a time.
The “Okpebholo Score Card So Far” is a masterclass in strategic strikes across the health field. At the grassroots, new Primary Healthcare Centres are rising across the three senatorial districts, returning quality care to the doorsteps of everyday Edo people. It is a deliberate pass to the most vulnerable, and the Governor is threading it with precision.
At the centre of the pitch, the 150-Bed Specialist Hospital in Edo Central is taking shape. When completed, it will stand as a fortress of advanced medical care, ensuring Edo sons and daughters no longer cross state lines in search of specialists. The message is clear: world-class healthcare is no longer an away match for our people.
The midfield is being reinforced with modern diagnostic equipment now flooding PHCs and general hospitals. From ultrasound to lab tools, diagnosis is getting faster, sharper, and more accurate. Combined with the revival of collapsed medical facilities inherited in poor condition, the Governor is not just patching holes in the defence, he is rebuilding the entire backline.
Upfront, the attack is relentless. Free healthcare for vulnerable groups has been expanded to cover pregnant women, children under five, and the elderly, because in Okpebholo’s playbook, no one gets left on the bench. To power this drive, a fresh recruitment wave of doctors, nurses, and health workers is addressing years of staff shortages, putting skilled hands where they matter most.
And in a move that brings the entire health system into the digital league, the introduction of digital records and supply chain tracking is sealing leakages in drug distribution. Accountability is now the captain of the team.
This is not governance by chance. It is governance by design. Governor Monday Okpebholo is proving that with vision, timing, and political will, a state’s health sector can move from the relegation zone to championship contention in record time.
The scorecard is out. The goals are visible. And for Edo people, the real victory is a healthier, stronger tomorrow taking shape today under a Governor who plays for the people, and plays to win.
