Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has acknowledged that the spiritual guidance and prayers of the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, have played a meaningful role in shaping his leadership journey and governance philosophy.
The Governor made the remark on Wednesday during the 20th Episcopal Anniversary thanksgiving service of Archbishop Akubeze, held at St. Paul Catholic Church, where he joined other dignitaries, clergy, and members of the public in celebrating two decades of episcopal service by the revered cleric.
Recalling his first encounter with the Archbishop, Governor Okpebholo described it as a defining moment that left a lasting impression on his personal and political trajectory.
“The first day I met him, I saw the glory of God upon his life. I knew, by the time I knelt before him, that I was going to conquer,” the Governor said.
He explained that at a critical point in his political journey, he sought the Archbishop’s prayers as he prepared to confront key challenges in the state, particularly issues bordering on insecurity and cultism.
“I requested a prayer from him. I said I was going to fight cultism and work for Edo people. I needed him to pray for me so that God would give me the strength. Today, I am happy that everything I requested has been answered by God,” he stated.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized that Archbishop Akubeze’s spiritual counsel and intercessions had strengthened his resolve in public service and provided moral grounding in governance. He further described the 20-year milestone as a celebration not only of ecclesiastical longevity but also of impactful service, mentorship, and societal influence.
“This is 20 years, and we are still expecting more years to come,” he added.
The thanksgiving service attracted prominent personalities across political, traditional, and religious circles, including the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion; former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu; and the APC State Deputy Chairman, Sylvester Aigboboh, among others.
In a statement signed and issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, PhD, the administration of Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed its respect for religious leadership and its enduring partnership with faith institutions in promoting peace, moral values, and social cohesion in Edo State.
Archbishop Akubeze’s episcopal tenure has been widely acknowledged for its emphasis on spiritual renewal, peacebuilding, and constructive engagement with governance structures, leaving a sustained imprint on both the Church and the wider society.
