The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resumed the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide, reaffirming its commitment to expanding voter participation and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Mike Eigbemekhe, a House of Assembly hopeful for Esan North East Constituency II in Edo State, has called on eligible constituents, particularly first-time voters and those yet to update their voter information—to take full advantage of the exercise.
Dr. Eigbemekhe described the resumption of CVR as a critical step toward inclusive governance, noting that voter registration remains the foundation of credible elections. He emphasized that active civic participation is essential for citizens to have a meaningful voice in leadership selection and policy direction.
“The right to vote is one of the most powerful tools available to citizens in a democracy,” Dr. Eigbemekhe said. “I encourage all eligible residents of Esan North East Constituency II, especially young people and those who have not registered or need to transfer or correct their details, to seize this opportunity provided by INEC.”
The CVR exercise allows Nigerians who have attained voting age to register for the first time, as well as enables registered voters to update personal details, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and transfer registration to new locations. INEC has assured the public that the process will be conducted in line with established guidelines to ensure transparency, accessibility, and efficiency.
Political observers note that renewed calls by aspirants and public figures for voter registration underscore growing awareness of the role of grassroots participation in democratic consolidation. In Edo State, where political engagement remains robust, the exercise is expected to boost voter turnout and enhance representativeness in future elections.
INEC has advised prospective registrants to visit designated registration centers across the country and comply with all procedural requirements. The commission also urged citizens to remain orderly and patient throughout the exercise.
As Nigeria continues efforts to deepen democratic culture, stakeholders stress that widespread participation in voter registration is not only a civic duty but also a vital contribution to accountable governance and legislative representation.
