Ambassador Tony Okonigene, Special Adviser on Political Matters to Senator Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea, has called on Esan youths to resist participating in groups or campaigns aimed at disparaging Governor Monday Okpebholo or any Esan political leader, urging them instead to embrace responsible political engagement anchored on unity, respect, and constructive dialogue.
Speaking on the importance of preserving the dignity of Esan leadership, Okonigene stressed that political participation should promote development rather than deepen divisions. He maintained that while democracy thrives on differing opinions, criticism must be guided by facts, civility, and a genuine commitment to the collective good.
According to him, societies make sustainable progress when their young people channel their energy into building institutions, promoting accountability, and advancing meaningful solutions rather than engaging in campaigns of personal attacks or character assassination.
Drawing lessons from history and political philosophy, he noted that great civilizations were strengthened by citizens who prioritized unity and responsible leadership over destructive rivalry. He argued that political disagreements should never degenerate into efforts to undermine the reputation of individuals, particularly leaders who represent the aspirations and identity of their people.
Okonigene observed that Governor Monday Okpebholo occupies an office entrusted with the hopes of Edo State, while every Esan leader, regardless of political affiliation, contributes to the collective image and influence of the Esan nation. He warned that persistent public condemnation of leaders without constructive engagement could erode public confidence and weaken the social cohesion necessary for development.
He further urged Esan youths to reject envy, personal vendettas, and divisive politics, emphasizing that such attitudes have never created jobs, built schools, improved infrastructure, or expanded opportunities for future generations.
Instead, he encouraged a political culture that supports good governance where progress is evident, offers objective advice where improvements are required, and expresses disagreement without hatred or malice. He said constructive criticism remains an essential element of democracy but must always be exercised with responsibility and respect.
The political adviser also reminded young people that every generation shapes the political culture inherited by the next, stressing that the values promoted today will influence the quality of leadership and public discourse in the years ahead.
He therefore appealed to Esan youths to become ambassadors of peace, unity, and development by promoting dialogue, strengthening community cohesion, and contributing positively to the advancement of Esanland and Edo State.
Okonigene concluded that lasting political relevance is achieved not by tearing others down but by building stronger communities, encouraging responsible leadership, and fostering an environment where differences are resolved through constructive engagement in the overall interest of the people.
