Benin City, Edo State – The Edo State Security Network (ESSN) has intensified its crackdown on illicit drug trafficking with the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of a substantial quantity of prohibited substances in separate operations across Benin City.

The suspects, identified as Efosa Uyi and Stella Thompson, were apprehended at different locations within the state capital following intelligence-led operations conducted by ESSN operatives. Authorities alleged that the suspects were involved in the distribution and sale of illicit drugs to users within the state.
Items recovered during the operations included significant quantities of cannabis (Indian hemp), crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as Ice), Colorado (Colos), Canadian Loud, and Scottish Loud, all of which were confiscated by security personnel.
Speaking to journalists during the presentation of the suspects and exhibits, Edo State Commissioner for Public Security and Safety, Festus Ebea, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes and protecting communities from the harmful effects of substance abuse.
According to Ebea, the arrests form part of an ongoing statewide campaign aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks and supporting law enforcement agencies in the fight against narcotics trafficking.
“We have arrested two suspects at different locations in Benin City and will be handing them over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution,” he said.
“We are working closely with the NDLEA and other security agencies to rid Edo State of individuals engaged in the sale and distribution of illicit substances. Edo State will not serve as a safe haven for drug traffickers and criminal elements.”
The commissioner disclosed that the suspects were arrested on May 29, 2026, and emphasized that the state government remains determined to sustain its anti-drug operations across all parts of Edo.
He further warned individuals involved in the illegal drug trade to desist or face the full weight of the law, stressing that the state would continue to strengthen surveillance and enforcement measures to curb drug-related activities.
Ebea also appealed to young people to avoid substance abuse, noting that drug addiction poses serious risks to personal development, public safety, and societal progress.
“Our message to the youth is clear: stay away from illicit drugs. Substance abuse has devastating consequences and can destroy promising futures. We must collectively protect our young people from the dangers associated with drug use,” he stated.
The commissioner highlighted the link between drug abuse and criminal activities, arguing that many violent and organized crimes are often fueled by substance abuse.
He called on media organizations and civil society groups to monitor the prosecution process and support efforts aimed at ensuring accountability and justice.
“The fight against illicit drugs requires collective action. We urge members of the media and the public to support security agencies by providing credible information that can help us identify and apprehend offenders,” Ebea added.
The suspects are expected to be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with Nigeria’s drug control laws.
The latest arrests underscore the ongoing efforts of the Edo State Government and security agencies to combat drug trafficking, reduce substance abuse, and enhance public safety across the state.
