Court Orders Remand of ‘Justice Crack’ in DSS Custody Over Alleged Cybercrime

Kingsley Ohens reporting

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Chidebere, widely known by the alias “Justice Crack,” in the custody of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) over allegations of cybercrime and related offences.

The defendant was arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on alleged cybercrime, breach of public peace, and felony. He entered a plea of not guilty to all counts.

During proceedings, counsel to the DSS, Mark Oruba, urged the court to remand the defendant in DSS custody pending trial, citing concerns related to public security. Defence counsel opposed the request, noting that although they had been duly served with the charges, they intended to file a formal bail application later in the week.

In a brief ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, directed that the defendant be held in DSS custody until May 25, when the court is scheduled to commence trial and consider the bail application.

According to the DSS, the charges stem from a viral post allegedly made by the defendant on his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he reportedly claimed that Nigerian military personnel are poorly equipped. Authorities contend that the statement constitutes a violation under applicable cybercrime and public order laws.

The case has been adjourned to May 25 for further proceedings.
