The (PDP) has entered a new phase of internal reorganization as its Board of Trustees (BoT) formally assumed national leadership of the party on April 30, 2026, invoking constitutional provisions to prevent a vacuum at the helm.
This decisive step follows a landmark judgment delivered by the , which invalidated the party’s 15th–16th November 2025 National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The convention had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), now nullified by the apex court’s ruling.
In addition to voiding the convention, the Supreme Court upheld the suspension of key party officials—Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Hon. Umar Bature, and Barr. Kamaldeen Ajibade—who served respectively as National Secretary, National Organizing Secretary, and National Legal Adviser. The ruling effectively renders all actions undertaken by these officials invalid, including the appointment of an Acting National Chairman and the establishment of a caretaker structure, as well as the conduct of the March 29, 2026 convention in Abuja.
With both the Turaki-led and Abdulrahman Mohammed-led leadership structures nullified, the BoT has asserted its constitutional authority as the party’s second-highest organ to step in and stabilize operations. Acting under Section 32(5) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), the BoT described its intervention as a necessary corrective measure to restore order, ensure continuity, and reposition the party for future electoral contests.
In a move aimed at consolidating control and charting a path forward, the BoT announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC). The meeting is expected to deliberate on the appointment of an Interim National Working Committee that will oversee the affairs of the party, manage its national secretariat, and align its activities with the timelines stipulated in the Electoral Act 2026.
Party staff have been directed to resume duties at the national secretariat under the supervision of the BoT, pending the installation of the interim leadership structure.
The BoT, under the chairmanship of Senator Adolphus Wabara, acknowledged the steadfastness of party stakeholders, including governors, lawmakers, and various internal organs, for their resilience during the crisis. It emphasized the need for unity, urging members to set aside personal and factional interests in favor of collective progress.
Framing the development as both a challenge and an opportunity, the BoT underscored the urgency of reconciliation and institutional rebuilding. It reiterated the party’s commitment to regaining political momentum and positioning itself competitively ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The intervention marks a pivotal moment for the PDP as it seeks to restore internal cohesion, reestablish functional leadership, and reaffirm its role in Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
