Ordinarily, I would have preferred to remain silent and allow time, facts, and history to speak for themselves. However, recent developments and the increasing volume of conversations surrounding Senator Joseph Ikpea Igiagbe have made it necessary for me to provide a more balanced perspective on his leadership and performance so far.
I am fully aware that some people may dismiss my views simply because I serve as one of his aides. That is their right. However, I have always believed that truth should never be sacrificed on the altar of politics, personal interests, public pressure, or social media sentiments. When misinformation, half-truths, and deliberate distortions begin to dominate public discourse, silence ceases to be neutrality, it becomes complicity.
My decision to come up with this write-up is therefore not driven by blind loyalty, political patronage, or an attempt to shield anyone from legitimate criticism. Rather, it is driven by a firm conviction that every public servant deserves to be assessed based on facts, measurable contributions, verifiable records, and a fair understanding of the office he occupies.
*Understanding the Role of a Senator*
One of the greatest challenges in our political environment today is that many citizens do not fully understand the distinction between the responsibilities of a legislator and those of an executive office holder. Consequently, senators are often judged using standards meant for governors, presidents, ministers, or local government chairmen.
It is therefore important to remind ourselves that Senator Joseph Ikpea is barely eight months in office. Eight months, not eight years.
More importantly, he is not a member of the executive arm of government. He is a legislator whose constitutional responsibilities include lawmaking, representation, oversight, advocacy, and policy formulation. While constituency projects and interventions may come through legislative influence, senators do not directly control government ministries, agencies, budgets, or project execution processes.
Yet, despite these realities, some critics have chosen to evaluate his performance as though he controls all government institutions and resources. Such assessments are not only unfair but also intellectually dishonest.
The truth is that leadership should be judged within the context of available opportunities, constitutional responsibilities, and the time spent in office.
When viewed from that perspective, Senator Joseph Ikpea’s record within a relatively short period reveals a leader who has remained focused on legislative responsibility, constituency engagement, human development, and strategic advocacy for the people of Edo Central Senatorial District.
*Legislative Contributions and Advocacy*
As part of his legislative responsibilities, Senator Ikpea sponsored the National Centre for Renewable Energy, Ewatto, Edo State Establishment Bill 2025 (SB.974), which successfully passed its First Reading in the Senate. While some may dismiss this as a routine legislative procedure, those familiar with parliamentary processes understand the significance of initiating legislation capable of attracting national attention and developmental opportunities to a constituency.
In addition to sponsoring legislation, he moved a motion on the floor of the Senate calling on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the devastating gully erosion that has continued to threaten communities across Esanland.
For decades, gully erosion has destroyed roads, swallowed farmlands, displaced families, endangered homes, and negatively affected economic activities in several communities. Rather than treating this challenge as a local issue, Senator Ikpea elevated it to the national stage by drawing the attention of the Federal Government and relevant agencies to the urgent need for intervention.
This is precisely one of the core responsibilities of a legislator: identifying the problems facing his people and using the legislative platform to seek solutions.
His growing influence and relevance within the National Assembly were further demonstrated through his appointment as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics.
This is not a ceremonial responsibility. Nigeria continues to face serious challenges associated with drug abuse, substance addiction, and illicit drug trafficking. Since assuming this position, Senator Ikpea has actively contributed ideas, recommendations, and policy suggestions aimed at strengthening institutional responses to the growing menace of illicit drugs across the country.
*Human Capital Development and Empowerment*
Beyond legislative activities, perhaps the most important measure of leadership is the extent to which ordinary people feel the impact of governance in their daily lives.
On this score, Senator Ikpea has continued to make meaningful interventions.
Over 250 youths and women have benefited from various empowerment programmes designed to promote self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and economic sustainability. In a nation where unemployment remains a major concern, such interventions may not solve every problem, but they undoubtedly provide opportunities for many families to improve their circumstances.
Thousands of indigent citizens have equally benefited from medical assistance, educational support, and various humanitarian interventions facilitated through his office.
One of the most remarkable educational interventions under his watch remains the sponsorship of over 7,500 students for JAMB registration.
For many families, especially in rural communities, the cost of JAMB registration represents a significant financial burden. By removing that obstacle, Senator Ikpea helped thousands of young people keep their dreams of higher education alive.
This is not merely a statistic.
Behind every sponsored registration is a student whose future became more attainable because someone chose to invest in education.
Furthermore, hundreds of Esan sons and daughters have been recommended for employment opportunities across federal and state establishments. While not every recommendation automatically translates into employment, the effort itself demonstrates a commitment to opening doors and creating opportunities for constituents.
*The Eror Community Example*
Perhaps one of the clearest examples of his responsiveness to community needs can be found in Eror Community, Uromi.
During his senatorial bye-election campaign, community members lamented the incessant attacks on their primary school by criminals. They expressed serious concerns about the safety of pupils, teachers, and school facilities. Their appeal was simple: they requested that the school be fenced to improve security and protect the learning environment.
Like few politicians, Senator Ikpea could have simply made promises and moved on.
Instead, he listened.
He accepted the request and made a commitment to address the challenge.
Today, the fencing project is actively ongoing.
What makes this intervention even more commendable is that after further assessment of the school’s condition, Senator Ikpea decided to go beyond what was originally requested. Moved by humanitarian considerations and his desire to improve educational outcomes for the children, he has approved the construction of additional classrooms to enhance the learning environment.
Importantly, the classroom project was never part of the community’s original request.
It is an additional intervention inspired by compassion and a genuine concern for the welfare and future of the children.
The process is already underway, and implementation is expected to commence in no distant time.
*Understanding the Budget Reality*
At this point, it is necessary to address an issue that many critics either do not understand or deliberately choose to ignore.
Government budgeting is a structured process.
Projects do not appear overnight.
When Senator Ikpea assumed office, the 2024 budget had already been prepared, approved, and was in operation. Consequently, he had no opportunity to influence the inclusion of projects within that budget cycle.
Similarly, much of the planning and preparation for the 2025 budget had already progressed significantly before his arrival in the Senate.
This means that many of the projects people now demand from him could not have been magically inserted into budgets that were largely completed before he took office.
Yet, despite these limitations, Senator Ikpea has reportedly continued to engage relevant authorities, lobby government agencies, and pursue strategic opportunities to attract supplementary projects capable of addressing the developmental needs of Esanland.
These efforts may not always generate headlines, but governance is often more complex than what appears on social media timelines.
Development requires planning.
Development requires approvals.
Development requires funding.
Development requires implementation timelines.
Most importantly, development requires patience.
Unfortunately, we now live in an era where many people expect instant results from processes that naturally take time. Some critics want overnight transformation without understanding the institutional mechanisms through which government operates.
*Criticism Must Be Fair*
This is not a defence against criticism.
Far from it.
Public officials should be scrutinized.
They should be questioned.
They should be held accountable.
However, accountability must be rooted in facts rather than hate, assumptions, evidence rather than emotions, and fairness rather than prejudice.
To support Senator Joseph Ikpea is not to suggest that he is perfect.
No leader is.
No public office holder should ever be above criticism.
Constructive criticism remains very important to democracy and good governance.
But criticism loses its value when it becomes detached from reality.
It loses credibility when it ignores context.
It becomes propaganda when it deliberately overlooks achievements while magnifying perceived shortcomings.
*Let Facts Speak*
The truth remains that many people across Edo Central continue to express confidence in Senator Ikpea because they judge him through direct interaction, accessibility, responsiveness, and visible interventions within their communities.
At the grassroots level, impact often speaks louder than online narratives.
Senator Joseph Ikpea may not be the loudest politician on social media. He may not engage daily in publicity campaigns or media spectacles. However, there is growing evidence that he prefers a leadership style built on quiet service, strategic engagement, and measurable outcomes rather than noise and self-promotion.
History teaches us that social media trends are temporary.
Public outrage is temporary.
Political attacks are temporary.
But genuine service leaves lasting footprints.
Long after online debates have faded, communities will remember who stood with them during difficult times, who listened to their concerns, who advocated for them, and who worked to improve their lives.
I have absolutely no doubt that Senator Joseph Ikpea is doing a great deal both within the Senate and on behalf of the people of Esanland.
Those who closely follow his activities, engagements, interventions, consultations, and behind-the-scenes efforts understand the enormous amount of work being undertaken daily in pursuit of development for our people.
As we say in our local parlance, “Who nor go, nor know.”
Those who are not on the ground may not fully appreciate the extent of the work being done, the obstacles being confronted, and the progress being made.
But time has a way of revealing the truth.
Results have a way of speaking louder than accusations.
Facts have a way of outliving propaganda.
That is why I have chosen to speak, not merely as an aide, but as a citizen who believes that truth deserves a voice, fairness deserves a chance, and leadership deserves to be judged by facts rather than assumptions.
Silence may be comfortable.
But in moments like this, truth remains a greater obligation.
