INEC Announces Final Phase of Nationwide Voter Registration Ahead of 2026 Electoral Cycle

Kingsley Ohens reporting

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally announced the resumption of the third and final phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, scheduled to commence nationwide on Monday, May 11, 2026.

In an official press statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja, the Commission disclosed that the exercise will run until Friday, July 10, 2026, marking the concluding window for eligible Nigerians to be captured in the national voter register ahead of forthcoming electoral activities.

INEC explained that the second phase of the CVR, which ended on April 17, 2026, was deliberately suspended to enable a comprehensive clean-up of the register. This process followed the publication of preliminary data for public scrutiny, allowing for claims and objections by registrants—an essential step in ensuring the integrity of the electoral database.

The Commission emphasized that the final phase presents a critical opportunity for all eligible citizens, particularly those who have recently attained the age of 18 or were unable to participate in earlier phases, to complete their registration. Beyond fresh registrations, INEC also encouraged already registered voters to take advantage of the period to request transfers, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and correct personal biodata where necessary.

To facilitate seamless participation, the Commission has made provisions for both physical and digital access. Citizens can either visit INEC offices at the state and local government levels nationwide or utilize the Commission’s online portal for preliminary processes.

As part of statutory procedures, INEC further announced that the updated Register of Voters will be displayed for public inspection from Thursday, July 23, to Wednesday, July 29, 2026. This stage is designed to allow citizens to verify entries, raise objections where necessary, and contribute to enhancing the credibility and accuracy of the register.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and operational efficiency, the Commission stated that all logistical and administrative arrangements have been finalized to ensure a smooth and orderly exercise across the country.

INEC concluded by urging all eligible Nigerians to participate actively in the process, stressing that voter registration remains a fundamental pillar in strengthening democratic governance and ensuring inclusive electoral participation.

The statement was signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, on May 5, 2026.
