We Can Not Afford Further Closure of Businesses Now. . . Dr. Joseph Ikpea.
In the face of current economic realities in Nigeria which is fast leading to the closure of Small Scale and Medium Scale businesses as well as some multinationals which will possibly climaxed into great job loss and unemployment which will drastically affect the nation, a frontline politician and a gubernatorial hopeful on the platform of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state, Dr Joseph Ikpea has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, arrest this negative drive which he said is capable of crippling the economy if unaddressed.
Dr. Ikpea while in a chat with journalists in Benin City, Edo State capital said “possible closure of businesses which may not have been envisaged during policy initiation but came as a resultant effect of such should be immediately addressed so that it will not constitute a drift to the growth of the Economy.
The APC chieftain disclosed that for companies or establishments like the giant pharmaceutical industry to have considered leaving Nigeria, will not only affect the employees but members of their immediate family, as well as the Nigeria economy viz as viz other negative impact on the society.
Hon Joseph Ikpea then called on the federal government to urgently look at the circumstances leading to the giants pharmaceutical industry leaving the country with a view of putting things in order as well as ensuring that alternative health care service providers in similar capacity are put in place.
The Edo State governorship hopeful also opined that the Federal Government should also encourage other health care providers in similar capacity with the pharmaceutical giant to trive so that visible lapses are not noticed in our health care sector.
With the relocation of this business giant from Nigeria, measures should be taken to mitigate whatever effect it’s exit may have on our economy and health sector. No vacuum should be seen to be created in the important drug concern of our people. Job loss occassioned by this should also be addressed. The bottom line here is that the federal government should ensure that no further closure of businesses is allowed.
