…….as he leads a delegation of lawmakers to rural communities in Benue state
The Committee chairman on Rural Development of the Federal House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun, Honorable member representing Esan West, Esan Central and Igueben Federal constituency, led a delegation of honourable members to Benue state for legislative oversight function.
The delegation was received graciously by his excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Lormem Alia the Executive Governor of Benue state at the state house, who evinced optimism of the positive impact the visit would influence.
Addressing the committee members, Fr. Hyacinth shared his thoughts on the needs of rural dwellers in the state, which primarily is the provision of basic infrastructures such as accessible roads, portable water and electricity. He commended the committee chairman, who defiled all odds despite the security threats of the routes to have fiercely decided to make such visit.
Rt. Hon. Marcus expressed his concerns that all odds must be broken to protect the interest of those who reside in rural settings as they are the engine room of the urban centres most especially in terms of food production. He noted, Benue state is a peculiar place which is recognized as the “food basket of the nation”, which was of foremost consideration, this its prioritization in order to ensure national food security vis-a-vis security and welfare of the locals.
“We are here to assess the needs and ongoing projects in rural communities here in Benue state. This will help us in legislating feasible policies and bills on rural development”, he added.
Climax of the visit was a tour of ongoing rural infrastructural projects such as roads, electricity at some interior villages in the state.
