Shaibu unleashes terror on Edo residents under the pretext of enforcing court judgement
The impeached deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, on Thursday, unleashed terror on residents of the State in the guise of purportedly enforcing a Federal High Court judgement reinstating him in office.
The former deputy governor had rallied thugs and other miscreants at the Benin Airport, in a bid to make a show of his return and enforce his reinstatement, following the Court ruling, on Wednesday, by Justice J.K. Omotosho.
Shaibu, who had returned with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo, led the thugs, along with the APC candidate through the Airport Road axis of Benin City, attacking innocent citizens and unleashing mayhem on private citizens who are going about their lawful businesses.
An eyewitness, who spoke to our correspondent, said the thugs who were allegedly accompanying Shaibu from the Airport to return to the Edo State Government House, went berserk shooting sporadically at private residents and destroying properties worth millions.
According to the eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity: “The scene today was scary and heartbreaking. So much destruction was perpetrated by Philip Shaibu and his boys. The former deputy governor who had just returned from the Airport put the Airport Road within the Benin metropolis on a standstill, leading his thugs through the road, attacking innocent citizens, and unleashing mayhem on private citizens who were going about their lawful businesses.
“I can’t really confirm if lives were lost as people scampered for safety but properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by Shaibu and his thugs. The government must take urgent action to bring the perpetrators of this dastardly to book and secure the safety and security of Edo people.
He added, “The governorship election is getting closer and this is happening. I think the plan of the APC is to create a sense of crisis and chaos in the State so that people don’t come out on election day to vote. It was so scary today and a lot of people are still counting their losses as a result of the wanton destruction.”
