Senator Adegbonmire begs constituents not to sell empowerment packs
Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central) has begged constituents not to sell starter packs provided to empower them.
Adegbonmire made the appeal in Akure at a training programme for women and youths on oil palm processing value chain. vital ICT skills, CCTV and solar-powered inverter installation.
Adegbonmire urged the beneficiaries to take responsibility for their own successes after the training
He said he has outlined other empowerment programme that would benefit majority of youths and women in the district.
According to him: “When you acquire skills, it’s up to you to make the most of them. It’s unrealistic for us, after providing these skills, to track and manage each individual.
“We have selected people whom we believe are responsible and who will value and apply the skills they’ve gained. Additionally, we have engaged consultants who will assess the program’s impact at its conclusion.
“My view is that we need to equip people with skills so they can become self-employed. It is unrealistic to expect the government—whether federal, state, or local—to employ everyone. There’s a misconception in Nigeria where people expect the government to be the primary employer, and when we talk about unemployment, they think the solution lies solely with government jobs.
“To truly address unemployment, we need to ensure people acquire skills that empower them to work independently. This program aims to provide such skills so that individuals can become self-employed, thereby significantly reducing the unemployment rate in Nigeria.”
Some of the beneficiaries said they would learn further skills to enable them become experts
