Former Governor Godwin Obaseki’s popularity in Edo State is dwindling rapidly, a mere few months after he left office. This is in stark contrast to his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, who still enjoys widespread goodwill and loyalty eight years after his tenure ended. The disparity in their post-governorship reception is a testament to the vastly different legacies they left behind.
Oshiomhole’s lasting impact can be attributed to the tangible legacy he left behind during his time as governor. He implemented projects that have stood the test of time, earning him the respect and admiration of the people. His commitment to development and good governance has cemented his place in the hearts of Edo residents.
On the other hand, Obaseki’s administration was marked by unfulfilled promises and abandoned projects. A prime example is the Gele seaport, Edo North airport, Industrial Park and so many more, he also tried claiming the 25km Benin-Asaba expressway, which was recently flagged off by President Tinubu under the current governor Monday Okpebholo administration. Obaseki, as usual claimed he he had signed an MOU for the project, but it never materialized during his tenure. Instead, he erected billboards along federal roads, which many see as an attempt to deceive the people of Edo, knowing full well that the MOU may be fake.
The Benin-Asaba expressway project is not an isolated incident. Obaseki’s administration was plagued by numerous failed promises and poorly executed projects. The state’s infrastructure, particularly its roads, suffered significant neglect during his tenure. The people of Edo are still grappling with the consequences of his mismanagement, including the economic and social impacts of inadequate infrastructure.
Obaseki’s failed leadership and broken promises have led to his dwindling popularity. He has been absent from Edo State since before the handover to his successor and has not returned since. This absence speaks volumes about his awareness of his administration’s shortcomings. The people of Edo are not surprised by his self-imposed exile, given the numerous failed promises and poorly executed projects that marred his tenure.
In contrast, Oshiomhole’s enduring popularity is a testament to his commitment to the people of Edo. He remains a respected figure in the state, and his legacy continues to inspire and motivate. As Edo State moves forward under new leadership, it is clear that Obaseki’s failed administration will serve as a cautionary tale, reminding leaders of the importance of accountability, transparency, and good governance.
