In Education, our teachers have a good story to tell… Joan Osa Oviawe, PhD
Hon. Commissioner of Education
Today, on Workers’ Day, I want to join in celebrating the incredible workforce that propels Edo State forward and express my deepest gratitude to H.E. Governor Godwin Obaseki for his unwavering commitment to our workers.
Governor Obaseki’s vision for a thriving Edo hinges on a strong, empowered workforce. His pro-worker policies have demonstrably improved the lives of many and are evident in policies like the recent minimum wage increase.
Did you know? In just eight years, the salary for a level 7 primary school teacher (the lowest level for teachers with NCE or Diploma) has more than tripled, from ₦42,000 in 2016, ₦73,000 in 2022 to over ₦127,000 with the recent rise in 2024.
This is an unprecedented increase, demonstrating Governor Obaseki’s dedication to ensuring our workers are valued and compensated fairly.
This isn’t just about money. These wage increases translate into improved living standards, a sense of security, and a well-deserved recognition for the vital role our workers (especially teachers) play.
Governor Obaseki’s commitment goes beyond financial support. Initiatives like EdoBEST 2.0 are designed to continuously professionalize the workforce, especially our educators. EdoBEST provides resources and training to help our teachers excel, ultimately benefitting our learners and the future of Edo State.
On this Workers’ Day, on behalf of the teachers of Edo State, I thank the Governor profoundly for this incredible and unprecedented feat.
Together, with Governor Obaseki’s leadership, we can build an even brighter future for all Edo workers.
Good Job you, Mr. Governor!
