EDSG COMMITTED TO ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Arc. Joshua Omokhodion, has disclosed that the Obaseki led administration is committed to environmental sustainability.
Making this disclosure during an interactive session organized by the Ministry to interface with the members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Edo State Branch in the Ministry’s premises in Benin City, the Commissioner described manufacturers as the key components of economic growth, providing jobs, driving innovations, and contributing to the prosperity of the State.
Arc. Omokhodion advised the Association to pay close attention to the effects of their activities on the environment as, it is proper to harmonize economic development with the preservation of natural resources as a way of ensuring that the future generation inherits a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, adding that the need to adopt sustainable practices, minimize waste, reduce emissions, and conserve resources for a sustainable environment cannot be overemphasized.
The Commissioner said, “Edo State has shown a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Our Government is dedicated to fostering a business-friendly environment that also champions ecological responsibility. We have implemented policies to incentivize green practices, reduce pollution, and promote the efficient use of resources. Yet, there is much work to be done, and it is a collective endeavor’’.
During her presentation, Director of Environmental Assessment and Climate Change, Mrs. Blessing Egharevba, said the synergy between manufacturers and environmental governance represents a harmonious partnership that is aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of industrial activities on the environment.
She enumerated some guidelines for harmonious working relationships, which include the establishment of environmental health safety units, the use of personal protective equipment for staff, regular fumigation of premises, at least, once a year, and the planting of trees in and around the premises, amongst others.
Responding, the Vice Chairman of the Association, Mr. Ehizogie Osadiaru appreciated the effort of the Commissioner and his team in creating a platform for free interaction, pledging the Association’s commitment to ensuring adherence to all safety requirements of the State Government.
The program, which was themed “The Manufacturers and Environmental Governance: Inseparable Partners towards a Sustainable Environment” had in attendance Captains of Industry, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Directors and Environmental Health Officers.
