Edo vigilante member shoots and kills colleague in Benin

…..Cyril Igiebor died after Edo Hospital refused to treat him without a police report

Confusion grieved family members after a local vigilante team deployed to secure the burial venue accidentally shot one of the guests.

The city of Benin has yet to come to the death of Cyril Igiebor, 28, who was shot and killed at a burial ceremony at Eheneden Lane, off Ekewan road, Uzebu quarters, Benin City, Edo State, on Friday, 20 October 2023.

Sources told the Standard Gazette that the Vigilante member, Moses Isimor, armed with a double barrel gun, was firing into the air during a service of songs of the late businesswoman when the bullet hit the 28-year-old man.

Other guests and organizers of the ceremony took to their heels for safety to avoid being the next victim of stray bullets and reckless endangerment.

TSG learned that Cyril recently got a five-year British working visa, bought his flight ticket and was ready to leave for the United Kingdom in a few days.

Officers from Evbuotubu Police Division in Benin City, whose jurisdiction the incident happened, arrested the suspect and remain in custody.

According to the information gathered by TSG, Cyril was not just a guest at the burial ceremony but one of the vigilante members who was there to ensure peace, now killed by a member of his group.

The stray bullets hit Cyril on his arm and chest. He was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility, which refused to treat him without a police report.

The good samaritans were rushing Cyril to a government medical facility when he was pronounced dead.

Members of the families whose burial ceremony the deceased refused to grant TSG requests to comment on the incident for fear of attack.

The triggered-happy vigilante who killed his colleague, Moses Isimor, is a member of the vigilante group covering the Upper Ekehuan axis of Benin City.

The body of the 28-year-old deceased, Cyril Igiebor, has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy and other investigations.

The deceased elder brother, Mr. Sunny Igiebor, who wept profusely, told The Standard Gazette, “We paid for a flight ticket three days ago for my younger brother to travel out of the country after he successfully secured a year UK work Visa. I am heavily pained right now. We can only call for justice”.

Three members of the Edo State Security Network were killed last month in Okhumwun community on Benin-Lagos road in Benin City when some yet-to-be-identified armed men attacked them in a location and opened fire.

That murder incident is yet to be resolved when another vigilante was also killed on Friday, 20 October 2023.

These frequent killings call for the attention of the Edo state security network to avoid further bloodletting.

The Police are yet to make a public statement on the incident.
