Edo State House of Assembly inaugurates House standing committees

Edo State House of Assembly, has inaugurated House standing committees in line with the House rules to enable them to continue with oversight functions.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku announced during plenary today, that those appointed as chairmen in various committees should act accordingly with effect, of the announcement. Some of the committees inaugurated include the Selection Committee which will be chaired by the Speaker, the Tender Committee to be chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Omozele Maria Edekor, Rules, Business, and Government House, to be chaired by Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian amongst others.

Also, at the plenary, the House gave a second reading, to A Bill for a Law to Establish Edo State Community Security Network Governance Law 2024 and for matters connected therewith.

The Bill which is aimed at checkmating the high level of insecurity in the state was supported by the majority of House members, with many citing cases as to why the Bill should be considered quickly.

Hon. Aiguobarueghian said, the Bill when passed, will empower the State Security Network which was acting as (vigilante) without proper legislation and legal framework.

Additionally, the Law will strengthen the security personnel to work harder and receive remuneration for their work, while those who lost their lives will be honored accordingly.

Other members, who supported the Bill include the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mrs Omozele Edekor, Hon. Osadolor Uzamere, Hon.Akokhia Ganiyu, Hon. Ugabi Kingsley, and Hon.Eric Okaka amongst others.

In their submission, they said the level of insecurity in the Country and the State, has reached a critical stage. They further agreed, that having a state security network will help curtail crimes and criminalities in the communities, because those who will work in the security network, are also members of the communities.

The House also condoled with families who lost loved ones as a result of insecurity challenges, bedeviling the various communities and constituencies in the State.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Agbebaku who read the condolence message said, he believes that the Bill when passed, will help stop further loss of lives due to kidnapping, cult-related killings, and theft in the State. He later referred the Bill to the House Standing Committee on Safety and Security, to report to the House in two weeks.

The House plenary was thereafter adjourned to Tuesday 14th, 2024.
