Edo govt organizes five-day training for healthcare workers in three senatorial districts

The Edo State Government has concluded a five-day training on Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC), Adolescent Youth Reproductive Health Services and Positive pregnancy experience (New ANC Mode) for over 90 nurses and midwives across the state’s three senatorial districts.

Speaking to journalists after the capacity building programme organized by the Ministry of Health, the Edo State Health Commissioner, Prof. Akoria Obehi, said the training was held concurrently in Edo North (Auchi), Edo South (Abudu) and Edo Central (Ekpoma).

Prof. Akoria said the programme was aimed at developing the skills of nurses and midwives in rendering LARC services, improving contraceptive uptake, quality of family planning/adolescent health services and increasing the pool of LARC providers in the State.

According to her, “The Edo State Government through the Ministry of Health has conducted a 5-day training for over 90 nurses and midwives on Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARC), Adolescent Youth Reproductive Health Services and Positive pregnancy experience (New ANC Mode) across the 3 senatorial districts of Edo.

“Participants were from public and private health facilities spanning primary, secondary, and tertiary health facilities. The program was held concurrently in Edo North (Auchi), Edo South (Abudu) and Edo Central (Ekpoma).”

Prof. Akoria further noted, “The programme for Edo South started with community entry, where the programme team comprising the training facilitators, the TCI representative and the LGA RH focal person met with some community delegates and opinion leaders which was made up of men, women and youths.

“The team which was led by the state DNS Mrs. Osazuwa Patricia enlightened the community members on the importance of family and life planning and encouraged them to be more receptive to their adolescents/youths, and not be judgmental. She further advised those that are sexually active and cannot abstain to opt for a contraceptive method, in order to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.”

The Health Commissioner added, “In all the centres, the Head of Local Government Administration, PHC Coordinators and Director of Nursing Services in the LGA visited the training centres and gave goodwill messages.

“There were sessions for hands-on practical demonstration of the different methods of family planning, group activities such as discussions, presentations and role-play, and learning of family planning songs. Participants also went to different PHCs for practical experience.”
