Edo Decides: Reasons Why APC Cannot Win in Edo State Again

By Rita Ebiuwa

The political climate in Edo State has undergone a dramatic transformation, making it increasingly unlikely for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to reclaim its former stronghold. Key factors, including the legacy of poor governance at the national level and the successful policies of the current state administration, contribute to the APC’s diminishing prospects.

The APC-led federal government under former President Muhammadu Buhari and the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has faced significant criticism for its handling of national affairs. Issues such as economic instability, rising inflation, and widespread insecurity have marred the party’s image. These challenges have left many citizens disillusioned with the APC, as they feel the government’s policies have failed to address the pressing needs of ordinary Nigerians. In Edo, this dissatisfaction has fueled a desire for political change, with many voters eager to distance themselves from the party associated with these national problems.

The APC’s troubles in Edo were compounded by the controversial decision of Adams Oshiomhole, during his tenure as the national chairman of the APC, to disqualify a sitting governor, Godwin Obaseki. This move not only fractured the party’s unity but also alienated a significant segment of its support base. The ensuing crisis cost the APC a valuable opportunity to retain control of the state, as Obaseki’s subsequent defection to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) shifted the political dynamics in favor of the opposition.

In the most recent elections, the APC’s choice of candidate further weakened its position. Voters are increasingly discerning, seeking leaders with proven competence and vision. The perception that the APC fielded a candidate lacking the requisite experience and capabilities to lead effectively only solidified the party’s diminishing appeal in Edo.

The Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration has implemented a series of reforms and policies that have resonated well with the people of Edo State, particularly among civil servants. Obaseki’s focus on infrastructure development, educational improvements, and economic diversification has fostered a sense of progress and stability within the state. The positive impact of these policies has solidified support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and made it difficult for the APC to present a compelling alternative.

The combination of disillusionment with national APC leadership and the successful policies of Governor Obaseki has created an environment where the APC struggles to find footing in Edo State. As the PDP under the leadership of candidate like Dr. Asue Ighodalo gains momentum, the APC finds itself in a precarious position.

Without substantial changes in strategy and leadership, the party’s prospects in the state remain bleak.
