Edo 2024 And ‘Death’ Of State Institutions

Saturday, September 21, 2024 went down as the lowest ever in the history of deploying ‘Dark Art’ to gain political supremacy over opponents. It has never been this bad since the return of democratic rule in 1999 in Nigeria. And it happened in Edo State of all places. A place populated by some of the most sophisticated, enlightened and well-read citizens of this country.
The rampant bastardization of national institutions – the Nigeria Police Force and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the exercise represents a grave threat to the very fabric of democracy.
Utilizing these vital structures as tools for the brazen theft of political mandates is not only a violation of public trust but a direct affront to the principle of representative governance. When election results are manipulated, the integrity of our democratic processes is irreparably damaged, fostering disillusionment on citizens and undermining the legitimacy of elected officials. Saturday witnessed the death of sacred national institutions in Nigeria.
Employing brute force and mindless coercion as instruments of political gain is an abhorrent tactic that echoes the darkest chapters of history. This shameless exploitation of power threatens societal stability and distorts the rule of law, reducing governance to mere tyranny.
It is imperative to recognize that such actions do not merely affect political landscapes; they erode the trust between the government and its people, corroding the very essence of civil society.
As a people we must stand resolutely against these egregious practices and advocate for accountability and transparency within our institutions. Our collective voice must unite in vehement condemnation of those who seek to manipulate democracy for personal gains. It is only through unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and fairness that we can restore faith in our political systems and uphold the dignity of our democratic processes.
