Beijing/Washington — China on Monday called on the United States to immediately release Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, accusing Washington of violating international law and undermining the sovereignty and security of other nations, amid reports and claims circulating about U.S. actions involving the Venezuelan leader.

In a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Beijing said it was “gravely concerned” by developments surrounding Maduro and urged the United States to cease what it described as unilateral actions that interfere in the internal affairs of sovereign states.

“China firmly opposes any behavior that violates the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter,” a foreign ministry spokesperson said, adding that disputes between countries should be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic engagement rather than coercive measures.

The spokesperson emphasized that no country has the right to act as a “global judge,” warning that actions perceived as infringing on another nation’s sovereignty risk destabilizing regional and international security.

The U.S. government has not publicly confirmed claims that President Maduro is in American custody. Washington has long imposed sanctions on Venezuela and accused Maduro’s government of corruption, human rights abuses, and undermining democratic institutions. Caracas, in turn, has repeatedly rejected those accusations, calling them politically motivated.

China’s intervention reflects its broader foreign policy stance opposing unilateral sanctions and military or extraterritorial actions, particularly those led by the United States. Beijing maintains close political and economic ties with Venezuela and has consistently defended the principle of non-interference in state affairs.

International reaction has been cautious, with several governments and analysts calling for clarity and restraint amid conflicting reports. Observers warn that escalating rhetoric between major powers over Venezuela could further strain already tense geopolitical relations.

As of now, the situation remains fluid, with no independent confirmation of the claims prompting China’s statement. Diplomatic observers say further developments are likely to draw increased international scrutiny in the coming days.
