Beyond its physical infrastructure, the medical centre is expected to serve as an important healthcare resource for Ewatto and neighbouring settlements in Esan South-East and surrounding areas. Its location offers the potential to reduce the time, transportation costs and other difficulties associated with travelling to distant towns for medical attention.

For pregnant women, children, elderly residents and patients requiring urgent medical intervention, access to appropriately staffed healthcare services within a closer geographical area could make a meaningful difference. The centre also has the potential to create employment opportunities for doctors, nurses, laboratory personnel, administrative workers, technicians and other support staff, subject to its staffing structure and operational requirements.

The establishment of the medical centre is consistent with the broader philanthropic objectives of the Agbonjagwe Leemon Ikpea Foundation, which was inaugurated on November 17, 2012, to advance charitable causes and improve the welfare of beneficiaries through initiatives in education, healthcare, empowerment and community development.

The foundation’s activities reflect Ikpea’s commitment to giving back to society and supporting initiatives that respond to practical needs. The Ewatto medical centre stands as one of its major healthcare infrastructure investments, providing a lasting physical asset intended to benefit the community for years to come.

As the commissioning date approaches, attention has also turned to the long-term management and sustainability of the facility. In July 2026, the Board of Trustees of the Late Augustus Akhabue Aikhomu Foundation, led by its chairman, Chief Dr. Leemon Ikpea, met with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja to discuss a proposed partnership with the Federal Government for the professional management of the medical centre.

Under the proposed arrangement, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Irrua, Edo State, is expected to manage the 62-bed medical centre. This arrangement is intended to leverage ISTH’s medical expertise and institutional experience to support the effective administration of the facility, promote professional healthcare delivery and ensure that its services meet appropriate clinical standards.

The involvement of ISTH is expected to provide an institutional framework for managing medical personnel, coordinating clinical services, maintaining equipment and supporting the delivery of healthcare to patients. By combining Chief Dr. Leemon Ikpea’s investment in healthcare infrastructure with the expertise of an established tertiary medical institution, the arrangement seeks to strengthen the hospital’s operational capacity and sustainability.

The proposed management structure highlights an important consideration in healthcare development: the construction and equipping of a medical facility must be matched by effective administration, qualified personnel, reliable funding, regular equipment maintenance and the consistent provision of essential medical supplies.

The commissioning scheduled for October 19, 2026, by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, is expected to mark an important milestone in the development of the medical centre and draw attention to the role of private investment in expanding healthcare infrastructure.

For Ewatto and neighbouring communities, the facility offers the prospect of improved access to medical services closer to home. Its 62-bed capacity, diagnostic equipment, maternity facilities, emergency unit, operating theatres and supporting infrastructure provide the foundation for a healthcare institution designed to respond to a broad range of medical needs.

Chief Dr. Leemon Ikpea’s investment demonstrates how private philanthropy can contribute to community development by addressing essential public needs. The medical centre’s significance will ultimately be measured not only by its infrastructure but also by its ability to deliver consistent medical care, support healthcare professionals and improve the health and wellbeing of the people it was established to serve.

As Ewatto prepares for the October 19 commissioning, the 62-bed medical centre stands as a major community development project with the potential to strengthen healthcare access and provide a lasting contribution to the wellbeing of residents across the area.
