The Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Distinguished Senator Joseph Igiagbe Ikpea, has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its latest operational breakthrough in the fight against illicit drugs and transnational narcotics trafficking in Nigeria.

Senator Ikpea’s commendation followed the agency’s reported arrest of a Mexican national, Arturo Carrera Loaiza, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and the subsequent dismantling of an industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory in Ebonyi State.

The NDLEA said the operation was the outcome of months of investigation into a wider criminal network allegedly involved in the establishment and operation of clandestine drug laboratories in Nigeria. The agency also reported the recovery of methamphetamine, laboratory equipment and substantial quantities of chemicals suspected to have been used in the production of the illicit substance.

Commending the operatives for what he described as a significant operational success, Senator Ikpea said the development underscores the importance of sustained intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and decisive enforcement in confronting the growing sophistication of international drug networks.

He noted that the arrest and laboratory dismantling represent more than the seizure of illicit substances, stressing that disrupting the infrastructure and networks behind drug production is critical to protecting communities, particularly young Nigerians, from the devastating consequences of substance abuse.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Senator Ikpea reaffirmed his commitment to supporting efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s institutional response to drug trafficking, illicit drug production and substance abuse.

He also encouraged NDLEA personnel to remain resolute in their duties, while calling for continued collaboration among relevant security agencies, international partners, communities and other stakeholders in addressing the drug menace.

The senator further emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach that combines effective enforcement with prevention, public awareness, rehabilitation and reintegration, noting that the fight against illicit drugs requires sustained commitment across all sectors of society.

The latest operation has attracted national and international attention, with the NDLEA describing the case as part of its broader efforts to prevent transnational criminal networks from establishing drug-production bases in Nigeria.

Senator Ikpea congratulated the leadership and personnel of the NDLEA on the breakthrough and reiterated the importance of strengthening the agency’s capacity to effectively confront emerging threats in the narcotics landscape.

“The fight against illicit drugs is a fight for the future of our nation. Every successful operation that dismantles a drug network and prevents dangerous substances from reaching our communities is a step towards protecting our young people and strengthening our society,” Senator Ikpea said.
