In a powerful demonstration of remembrance, gratitude, and community service, renowned philanthropist and education advocate, Dr. Joseph Adonor Ohens, has immortalized the legacy of his late father through the donation of a modern water facility to the Nigerian Police Force Area Command Headquarters in Irrua, Edo State.

The project, commissioned during the administration of Area Commander ACP Benjamin E. Benafa, stands not only as a tribute to the life and service of the late Mr. B.O.A. Ohens, a distinguished police officer who served Nigeria between 1940 and 1975, but also as a lasting investment in the welfare of police personnel, their families, and the wider host community.

For Dr. Ohens, the initiative represents far more than infrastructure development. It is the fulfillment of a deeply personal obligation rooted in family values, public service, and gratitude. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, he reflected on the profound influence his father had on his understanding of discipline, sacrifice, and civic responsibility.

“My father’s years in service taught me that true leadership is measured by the impact one leaves on others,” Dr. Ohens remarked. “This project is my way of preserving his memory while serving those who continue to dedicate their lives to the protection of society.”

A distinguished academic and Global President of the Annunciation Catholic College Old Students Association (ACCOSA), Dr. Ohens also highlighted the significant contributions his association has made toward advancing educational development at their alma mater. He noted that sustained interventions by the association played a crucial role in the successful reopening of the school’s boarding facilities in 2024, underscoring his lifelong commitment to giving back to institutions that shaped his journey.

The newly commissioned water system has been designed to provide sustainable access to clean and safe water. The facility features a modern tiled water collection point equipped with multiple dispensing taps, elevated storage infrastructure, and integrated provisions for solar-powered operation and lighting. To ensure long-term functionality, technical support arrangements have already been established, including periodic maintenance of the borehole system and solar installations.

The commissioning ceremony attracted respected community leaders and stakeholders who commended the initiative and pledged continued support. Among them was High Chief Henry Okodogbe, who contributed ₦100,000 toward the maintenance and sustainability of the facility, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving public infrastructure. High Chief Igene also joined other dignitaries in advocating stronger partnerships between private citizens, communities, and public institutions.

Beyond the water project, Dr. Ohens further demonstrated his commitment to community welfare by providing financial assistance for the repair of an aging police Siena bus used to transport students to church services. He described the gesture as an expression of gratitude for the longstanding support and goodwill extended by the police to educational institutions within the community.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Dr. Ohens shared that he had once considered a career in the police force, inspired largely by his father’s service. He recalled conversations about the historical challenges faced by communities in the former Mid-West and Bendel regions, experiences that have continued to shape his passion for community advancement and social responsibility.

Today, the Nigerian Police Force Area Command Headquarters in Irrua benefits from a critical public utility that will improve health outcomes, reduce operational challenges, and enhance the quality of life for officers and residents alike. More importantly, the project serves as a compelling reminder that the most enduring monuments are those built in service to humanity.

In celebrating the life and legacy of the late Mr. B.O.A. Ohens, Dr. Joseph Adonor Ohens has transformed personal remembrance into a shared public benefit—creating a legacy that will continue to flow, quite literally, for generations to come.

Community leaders, and stakeholders commends Dr. Joseph Adolor Ohens for his exemplary leadership, philanthropy, and unwavering commitment to community development. The publication also recognizes the contributions of ACP Benjamin E. Benafa, High Chief Henry Okodogbe, High Chief Igene, the Annunciation Catholic College Old Students Association, and all stakeholders whose collaborative efforts continue to strengthen public institutions and foster sustainable development.

In communities across the world, access to water represents life, security represents peace, and service to those who have served remains one of society’s highest expressions of gratitude.
