From Irrua to the World: ISTH Unveils Ambitious Vaccine Initiative to Redefine Global Health Security

In a bold and strategic move that signals Nigeria’s growing influence in global health innovation, Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) has inaugurated the ISTH Vaccine Group (ISTH-VAG), a pioneering initiative aimed at advancing vaccine and therapeutic sovereignty for Nigeria and the wider African continent.

The inauguration, held at the hospital’s boardroom, marks a critical transition from policy dialogue to institutional execution, positioning ISTH at the forefront of efforts to localize vaccine production and strengthen Africa’s preparedness against future pandemics.

At the center of this initiative is the Chief Medical Director and CEO, Prof. Reuben Eifediyi, who also serves as Technical Lead of the group. He emphasized that while Nigeria has developed policies to support vaccine production, the country still faces significant gaps in infrastructure, particularly in building an effective cold supply chain. He stressed that the shift from research to actual vaccine development is no longer optional, describing the absence of local vaccine capacity as a matter of national insecurity. Aligning with continental aspirations, he noted that Africa aims to achieve 60 percent reliance on locally produced vaccines by 2063.

He further highlighted that the key to confronting future pandemics lies in strengthening laboratory systems and accelerating the development of antiviral vaccines, areas the ISTH-VAG is designed to prioritize through innovation and translational research.

The initiative has received strong institutional backing from the immediate past CMD and Advisor to the group, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbenin, who described it as both timely and transformative, expressing confidence in its success and pledging continued support.

In outlining the group’s strategic direction, Dr. Yemihan Ogbetere explained that a core objective is to position ISTH as a reference center for vaccine production across West Africa, while also promoting vaccine literacy to strengthen public confidence and uptake.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Dr. Cyril Erameh, Chairman of the Vaccine Committee, commended the leadership behind the initiative and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to delivering impactful outcomes.

The ISTH Vaccine Group comprises a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Sheila Ojor as Secretary, alongside Dr. Joseph Okoeguale, Dr. Sebastine Oiwoh, Dr. Qudus Lawal, Dr. Alphonsus Aigbiremolen, Dr. Osahon Otaigbe, and Dr. Esele Ekuaze, reflecting a coordinated and expert-driven approach to advancing vaccine science and strengthening health systems.

With the launch of ISTH-VAG, ISTH is not only elevating its institutional profile but also contributing meaningfully to Africa’s broader push for health sovereignty, resilience, and global relevance. By bridging the gap between research and real-world application, the hospital is emerging as a critical player in shaping a future where Africa is better equipped to respond to health emergencies and less dependent on external vaccine supply chains.
