OPOJI, EDO STATE, NIGERIA — A quiet but significant wave of grassroots development is steadily unfolding in Opoji, as respected community leader, Ehikioya Anegbe, JP, Esq., FNiob, has facilitated strategic educational support initiatives aimed at strengthening local institutions and expanding opportunities for young people in the community.
In a landmark intervention, Anegbe successfully influenced Fidelity Bank Plc to extend its School Community Corporate Social Responsibility outreach to Opoji. Through this engagement, the two secondary schools in the community benefited from the distribution of educational and corporate support materials — a development widely described by stakeholders as a foundational step toward positioning Opoji as a growing hub for institutional partnerships and structured development support.
Describing the achievement as only the beginning, Anegbe expressed optimism that more corporate and institutional collaborations would follow. He emphasized that sustainable progress for Opoji requires a unified commitment from its sons and daughters across Nigeria and in the diaspora.
“I implore every Opoji indigene, wherever you are in the world, to make Opoji the epicentre of development and contribute in any way you are able,” he stated, reinforcing the need for collective ownership of the community’s future.
In a related development, community elites — led by an undisclosed Opoji benefactor — have initiated an educational empowerment programme designed to support deserving students. The initiative provides scholarships for ten Opoji undergraduates studying in Nigerian universities, while also covering enrolment fees for NECO/School Certificate examinations for ten Opoji secondary school students anywhere in the country. Although the programme commenced this year, four students met the qualifying criteria in its maiden phase, with organisers expressing confidence that broader awareness will enable more eligible candidates to benefit in subsequent cycles.
The identity of the principal sponsor remains undisclosed, reflecting what many observers describe as a longstanding culture of quiet philanthropy among Opoji indigenes. Several community members are known to have independently undertaken similar interventions in education and youth development over the years, reinforcing a tradition of communal responsibility and forward-looking investment in human capital.
Development advocates note that education-centred grassroots initiatives such as these often yield lasting socio-economic impact, strengthening community cohesion while expanding access to opportunity for the next generation.
As momentum builds, Anegbe saluted “Opoji de-light worldwide,” acknowledging the growing network of indigenes committed to advancing the community’s development aspirations. His message was clear and resolute: Opoji’s transformation lies in shared vision, shared sacrifice, and shared action.
“We need each other to develop,” he affirmed, underscoring a collective call that is fast becoming the rallying point for a renewed chapter in Opoji’s growth story.
