The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a decisive step toward deepening infrastructure development with the inspection of key road corridors in Edo Central, signaling the commencement of the second phase of an ambitious connectivity project designed to unlock rural economic potential.
During the inspection tour on Sunday, the governor assessed the proposed Amedokhian–Iruele–Awo Road and the Unewa–Ohe–Uzea–Awo Road, spanning Esan North East and Esan Central. The projects form a critical extension of earlier completed works in the المنطقة, underscoring a phased and strategic approach to regional development.
Addressing journalists at the site, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the initiative builds directly on the success of the first phase, with a clear focus on expanding access and linking underserved communities to vital infrastructure.
“The reason for this inspection is because the first section is already completed. This is the second phase. From here, we are extending the corridor to Awo, where the railway station is located. It covers approximately 26 kilometres, and by the end of the project, we will achieve seamless connectivity with adjoining communities,” the governor stated.
He further highlighted the broader socio-economic implications of the project, noting that the new road network is expected to connect over 15 communities, thereby enhancing mobility, stimulating commerce, and facilitating access to essential services.
“We are linking more than 15 communities within this axis to open up the area and drive development,” he added.
Providing technical insights into the project, the Special Adviser on Projects Implementation and Monitoring, Engr. Williams-Bello Phoebe, noted that the initiative is deliberately structured to support agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. According to her, the road network will improve access to government-backed farming clusters while strengthening intra-regional transportation.
“This corridor will connect multiple communities and link directly to the railway infrastructure at Ohe. It is designed to improve rural accessibility and support farmers by easing the movement of goods and people,” she explained.
Engr. Phoebe also disclosed that preliminary assessments are already underway, with contractors mobilized to evaluate the terrain and expedite execution timelines. She described the project area as largely undeveloped but rich in economic potential, assuring that implementation would proceed with urgency.
The inspection reflects the Okpebholo administration’s broader policy thrust centered on infrastructure-led growth, rural-urban integration, and the enhancement of agricultural value chains across Edo State.
Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, affirmed that the initiative aligns with the administration’s commitment to delivering sustainable and inclusive development through targeted capital projects that directly impact communities.
