Okpebholo Receives 2025 Hajj Report, Calls for Strategic Early Planning as 2026 Participation Declines

Urbanscopnews reporting

The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has underscored the importance of proactive planning and institutional efficiency in the management of pilgrimage operations, following the formal presentation of the 2025 Hajj report by the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board.

The report was delivered by the Amirul Hajj and traditional ruler, HRH Mallam Ali D. Suleyman, the Oghieaga of Ivbie, who led a delegation of board officials to Government House.

Addressing the delegation, Governor Okpebholo described the Hajj as a deeply rooted religious obligation that demands structured, forward-looking coordination. He emphasized that early engagement with government remains critical to ensuring optimal outcomes for intending pilgrims.

“When issues are presented in good time, they can be addressed effectively. Late requests, especially on the eve of critical timelines, significantly constrain the government’s capacity to intervene meaningfully,” the governor stated.

Expressing concern over procedural delays that affected preparations for the 2026 Hajj, Governor Okpebholo advised stakeholders to institutionalize a planning cycle of no less than nine months ahead of each pilgrimage exercise. He further stressed the need to prioritize pilgrims’ health, logistics, and overall readiness.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusivity and religious harmony, the governor assured continued support for Muslim faithful across the state.

“We remain committed to supporting the Muslim community and sustaining the peaceful coexistence that Edo State is known for,” he added.

In a forward-looking policy direction, Governor Okpebholo disclosed that the state government is exploring the possibility of securing federal approval for Edo State to serve as a regional departure hub for Hajj operations in the South-South. He noted that such a development would stimulate local economic activity and strengthen Edo’s strategic relevance in national pilgrimage logistics.

The governor also commended the board’s leadership for what he described as a successful 2025 Hajj exercise, acknowledging the positive impact of their coordination and service delivery.

Earlier in his remarks, HRH Mallam Ali D. Suleyman praised the state government’s support, noting that the 2025 Hajj recorded significant improvements in pilgrims’ welfare. These included enhanced accommodation in close proximity to the Ka’aba, provision of culturally appropriate Nigerian meals, and strengthened medical services.

He revealed that Edo State’s arrangements drew commendation from officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and were also utilized by pilgrims from other states.

However, the Amirul Hajj highlighted emerging challenges for the 2026 pilgrimage, particularly the implications of a stringent payment deadline introduced by Saudi authorities. According to him, the development adversely affected over 351 intending pilgrims, leaving only 93 eligible to participate.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Okpebholo for sponsoring 50 pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj, while noting that financial deadline constraints limited broader participation.

Mallam Suleyman further outlined operational gaps confronting the board, including inadequate power supply, limited internet connectivity, security concerns, and the absence of dedicated operational vehicles both within Nigeria and in Saudi Arabia.

Despite these challenges, he maintained that with improved planning frameworks and sustained government backing, Edo State is well positioned to emerge as a key Hajj departure hub for both the South-South and South-East regions, with attendant economic benefits.

Other officials present at the meeting included the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor Esq.; Chairman of the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mallam Musa Muhammad Uduimoh; Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Eranga Abdulkabir Muhammadkabir; and Acting Chairman of the Edo State Musaabaqah, Barr. Hamza Umar.

This statement was issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, who reiterated the administration’s resolve to enhance institutional coordination and elevate the standard of pilgrimage management in Edo State.
