Benin City, February 19, 2026 — The Edo State Government has demolished a building in the Amagba area of Benin City allegedly linked to suspected members of the Aye confraternity, as part of an intensified campaign against cult-related violence across the state.
The demolition was carried out by a special security task force code-named Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers in Edo State, led by the Principal Security Officer to the Governor.
According to officials, the property was identified during investigations into recent cult-related killings. Two suspects were arrested at the premises, while five others reportedly escaped and have since been declared wanted by authorities.
Addressing journalists after the operation, the spokesperson for the squad, Mr. Eribo Enwanta, said the state’s anti-cultism laws would be strictly enforced without exception.
“The Governor has given a clear mandate that cultism and kidnapping must be decisively addressed. No one is above the law. Those who escaped arrest remain wanted, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them and ensure they face justice,” Enwanta said.
He also confirmed that two of three community youth leaders (Okiaghele) earlier directed to present themselves for questioning had complied and were undergoing profiling. A seven-day ultimatum issued to the Okiaghele of Obagie community, identified as Ken Dada, remains in effect.
Enwanta warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract legal consequences, stressing that the state would deploy all lawful means to enforce compliance if necessary.
In a related development, the task force sealed a residence in the Upper Uwa area of Benin City described as the last known address of Etiosa Akhiombare Joshua, also known as “Baba Josh,” who authorities allege is affiliated with the Maphite Confraternity and suspected to be a financier of a recent killing along Wire Road.
Security officials said intelligence reports suggest the suspect may have relocated to Canada. The state government has indicated it is working with international law enforcement channels, including Interpol, to facilitate further investigation and possible extradition.
Authorities further stated that properties linked to individuals under investigation may remain sealed pending their appearance before security agencies.
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to restoring public safety and curbing cult-related violence. Officials emphasized improved coordination within the Office of the Principal Security Officer and pledged sustained enforcement actions.
In a statement accompanying the release, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, affirmed the administration’s resolve to uphold the rule of law and ensure that those implicated in violent crimes are brought to justice.
The government urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing investigations, assuring the public of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property across Edo State.
